Installing SPSS on your Computer
What you need to know before you install
Before starting, be ready with the following information for SPSS version 16 (This is the current version, now available for both Macintosh and Windows):
Serial Number: (check with Technology Services for number)
Authorization Code for JUNE 2008 to JUNE 2009: (check with Technology Services for number)
How to install SPSS
Now you're ready to get your computer connected to the software that lives on the server. Follow the steps below:
Windows PC's
- Right-click on your START button, and select Explore.
- In the resulting window, there should be long list of folders and "drives" listed down the left side of the window.
- Find the drive labeled apps on winapp (on many computers it is the J drive, but it may be different on yours).
- After you locate that drive, double click on it to open it.
- Locate and open the Spss16 Install folder.
- Locate a file entitled Setup (may also be called setup.exe) and double-click on it to start it.
- In the resulting window, click on Install SPSS (the first item). When prompted for the type of license you are using, choose SITE LICENSE.
- In the next window, enter the following information:
- For the Username, enter Whitman College
- For the Organization name, enter Whitman College
- For the serial number, use the serial number provided by Technology Services
- Next, you will be asked if you accept the license agreement. Click the circle next to I accept and then click the NEXT button. You may also be shown yet another license-related window that lists some "limitations" of the license -- just click NEXT to continue.
- If you have an existing (older version) of SPSS installed on your computer, you should get a message telling you that the installer has detected an older version that will be un-installed before the new version is installed. Accept that, and click the appropriate button to continue. At this point, the installer will grind away for awhile, so just be patient.
- When the installer is finally done, a new window will appear with a message directing you to License and register SPSS for Windows now. Click the appropriate button to continue.
- When you see the window for the "License Authorization Wizard", click the START button.
- Select the option Use Authorization via Internet to get License.
- Enter the authorization code. As a reminder, it is a 20-digit code you should have received from Technology Services.
- You may be taken to web page to " register" -- you can skip that step if you want, or you can enter your contact information. If you register, you will likely receive frequent email with SPSS information, deals, etc., which may or may not be of interest to you. This is simply registering for login access to the SPSS website -- not anything required for the program.
- Once you are finished with the web page, close it and find the SPSS window again. You should be able to click a button to " Finish" the installation, after which you may see a message directing you to close and re-open SPSS in order for the new version to work.
- Once you are back at your normal computer desktop, you can find the new SPSS program icon by clicking the
START button (just a left-click), going to
All
Programs then
SPSS, then you will see the icon to start SPSS. If you wish, you can create an icon on your desktop by using your
right mouse button to click on the SPSS icon, then selecting
Send To and then
Desktop (Create Shortcut).
