netFiles Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How much space do I have on netFiles?

Be default, students have 200MB, staff members have 400MB, and faculty members have 500MB each.  This quota includes all files in your home folder, including those in your trash.  People needing more space for academic or administrative purposes may request a quota increase from Technology Services.

Can I save files directly to netFiles instead of having to upload them?

That depends. netFiles Folders uses a protocol called "WebDAV," which is not supported by all programs. Microsoft Office products and new Adobe products are some of the programs that do work with netFiles. For the programs that don't work with netFiles, you must save a local copy and then upload it to netFiles using either the folder view or the web.

Can I upload entire folders at once?

Yes you can! You'll need to use netFiles Folders (rather than the web interface). Simply drag the folder(s) from your computer (or the acad-server) to your netFiles folder. Files can be copied using either a Mac or a PC, but file transfer is significantly faster when using a PC.

Can I use netFiles Folders on my personal computer?

Absolutely! For instructions, please visit the documentation for setting up your PC or your Mac.

Why does it say my account is full when I should have plenty of space available?

Usually, this happens because your trash is filling up your account. When you delete a file from your netFiles account, it goes into the netFiles trash. Any files in your trash still count against your size limit.

It is also possible to fill up your trash when using netFiles Folders without actually deleting any files. When you are working directly off of your netFiles account (using the folder view), netFiles puts backup copies of your files into the trash every time you save new changes. If you are working on a file and periodically press Save, you will have multiple older versions of that file in your trash. These can accumulate rather quickly, but that should not deter you from saving often.

You should get in the habit of emptying your trash regularly, but first be sure that you have not accidentally deleted any files that you want to keep. To empty your trash in the web view, click on the "Empty Trash" link under the Utilities section on the left-hand frame. For instructions on emptying your trash in the folder view, see below.

How do I empty my trash using the folder view?

Believe it or not, all you have to do is delete the trash folder from your home folder. When netFiles needs the trash again, it will simply re-create the folder. You cannot delete the trash folder and another file or folder at the same time.

How do I share files with other people?

There are multiple ways of sharing files with people both on- and off-campus. Please visit our specific documentation on sharing.

What's the deal with the acad-server?

The acad-server is now read-only for all students not graduating this May. This means that you will be able to open any files you have on the acad-server, but you cannot save any new information there. That includes saving changes to files as well as creating new files. Your files will remain accessible on the acad-server through the end of the semester. You should not plan on accessing your files on the acad-server after commencement.

If you try to save files to the acad-server, you will likely get a message that says either that the disk is read-only or that the disk is full. You will need to save your files either to netFiles or to another storage medium (flash drive, CD-R, etc).
