SSH Software for Mac OSX

All of the Mac machines in the WCTS computer labs have special shortcuts set up to create an SSH connection for you. If you don't have these shortcuts, a graphical SSH client called JellyfiSSH should be installed on your system. This program can also be downloaded for free for use on your personal machine.

In the Labs

There are two "W" icons in the Dock. One is green (Students) and the other is blue (Marcus). Click on the icon that matches your designated server. A terminal window will open, automatically initiate an SSH connection, and fill in your username. Press [Enter], type your password, and press [Enter] again. If you filled in the correct credentials, you will now be logged in.

On Your Own Computer

Download and Installation

  • Open your web browser and go to http://www.arenasoftware.com/grepsoft/ to download the latest version of JellyfiSSH (version 4.2 as of this writing).
  • Double-click the downloaded file to mount it to your desktop.
  • Open the JellyfiSSH mount point, and drag the JellyfiSSH program (the icon looks like the image to the right) into your Applications folder.

Configuring JellyfiSSH

  • To open a new connection: type the name of your designated server in the "Host or IP" field, and your username in the "Login name" field, then click [Connect].
  • To save a connection: complete the above steps except for clicking [Connect]. Type a name for your this session (such as "SSH to Students") in the text field next to "Bookmark Title", then click [Add].
  • To open a saved connection: select the session name from the "Bookmark" dropdown menu and click [Connect].
  • To edit a saved connection: select the session name from the "Bookmark" dropdown menu. Change your settings as needed, then click [Modify] (this button will appear where the [Add] button is in the screenshot). Click [OK] when it asks you if you would like to modify the bookmark.

When a session is launched, the configuration window will close and a terminal window will open. Once the your computer is able to contact the intended server, you will be prompted for your username and password. If you entered correct credentials, you will be given a command prompt (such as "marcus%"), and will have successfully connected.
