SSH via the Command Line

If you are using Mac OSX or a flavor of Linux as your operating system, you can open an SSH session directly through the command line (also known as a Terminal window or shell). The Mac OSX terminal can be found in the "Applications/Utilities" directory. Accessing an Linux shell depends on the particular GUI (or lack thereof) that you have installed.

  • Open a Terminal window or launch a shell.
  • Type the following text string, replacing [username] with your username and [myserver] with your designated server name:
    ssh [username]@[myserver].whitman.edu
  • If you are asked if you want to trust this host, answer "yes".
  • Type your password when prompted. You may not see anything being typed at the password prompt, but your password really is being typed.
  • Press [Enter]
If you entered correct credentials, you should be successfully connected.
