Whitman E-mail
Accessing Your E-Mail
There are a variety of ways in which you can access your Whitman E-mail account. WebMail is an easy way to get started, and a command-line program called Pine is available for the more adventurous. You can also access your Whitman E-mail using almost any modern 3rd-party E-mail software program. We have guides available below that will help you get started with some of the more popular programs.
Mozilla Thunderbird
Mozilla Thunderbird is cross-platform and open-source E-mail program written by the same people who produce the Mozilla Firefox web browser. It is available as a free download from the Mozilla website. We have instructions for setting up Thunderbird for Mac OS X and Thunderbird for Windows.
Apple Mail for Mac OSX
Also sometimes referred to as "Mac Mail," this is the default E-mail program that ships with every version of Mac OS X. See our instructions for configuring Apple Mail.
Microsoft Outlook
Outlook is an advanced E-mail program that comes with most versions of the Microsoft Office Suite. Because there are various setup differences between some of the different versions of Outlook, we have instructions for configuring Outlook 2000 and Outlook 2003.
Microsoft Outlook Express
This is the default E-mail program that ships with nearly every version of the Windows operating system. We generally recommend people avoid using it, but if this is your program of choice, see our instructions for setting up Outlook Express.
Generic E-mail Setup Information
If your prefered E-mail program isn't included in the above list, our
generic e-mail setup information page may be of help. It will not walk you through every setup step (as every E-mail program is different), but it does have the critical information that will let you get .
Whitman WebMail
WebMail is a great way to access your email when you are on the go or from the computer labs on campus. All you need to access your email through WebMail is a web browser on a computer that has access to the Internet.
To get started, simply log in at https://webmail.whitman.edu. More information can be found in our instructions for using WebMail.
Pine
Pine is a non-graphical E-mail client that runs in a terminal session, and is very fast and efficient once you get used to it. In addition to its speed, Pine has some features that make it very valuable. Knowing how to use Pine is a very valuable skill to have. However, it is not as easy to use as many graphical E-mail clients or the WebMail interface.
Additional E-mail Resources
Junk Mail, Virus, and Spam Filtering
By default, your incoming email is scanned for virus infections by a service called Postini. If you are becoming swamped with SPAM and other junk mail, you can also activate Postini's junk and SPAM filtering tools to help stem the tide.
Mailing Lists
Whitman has a number of campus-wide E-mail lists, as well as resources for creating and managing your own mailing lists. See our mailing lists information page for more.
E-mail Auto-Forwarding
You can set up your account so that it will automatically forward all of your incoming Whitman E-mail to another E-mail address. This is a good idea to do if you have recently graduated and are switching E-mail addresses, or will not have access to your Whitman address for an extended period. See forwarding E-mail to another address for more.
Setting a Vacation Message
You can also set up your Whitman E-mail account so that it will automatically respond to all incoming messages with a generic "Away" or "I'm out of the office and on vacation" message. It is a good idea to set a vacation message if you do not plan on reading any of your Whitman E-mail for a significant period of time.
