Gilbert F. Mireles is an Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department at Whitman College. Dr. Mireles received his B.A in Sociology with Honors from Swarthmore College in 1996. He holds an M.Phil. (2003) and a Ph.D (2005) in Sociology from Yale University. He arrived at Whitman College in 2002. During his time at the College he has taught courses in social stratification, social movements, economic sociology, race and ethnicity, crime and delinquency, and introductory sociology. Professor Mireles’ research is broadly focused on the socio-political integration of immigrant communities into U.S society. He is currently completing a book that examines recent labor mobilization among immigrant workers in California’s agriculture industry. In the near future Mireles plans to complete two shorter projects. One deals with voting patterns among middle class Latinos in California, and the other examines a faith-based, social justice, for profit apple company in Southeastern Washington. In the Spring of 2008 Professor Mireles was co-coordinator of the State of the State for Washington Latinos Project at Whitman College which studies the social and political conditions for Latinos in the state of Washington (walatinos.org). Originally from California's Central Valley, Mireles moved to the Northwest after having spent too many cold winters in the Northeast. He enjoys the casual yet stimulating intellectual atmosphere at Whitman College and appreciates Walla Walla's mobile Mexican food.
