All Family Weekend events and activities are completely optional. There are no requiered events. The most important thing to do is spend some quality time with your student.

8:00 a.m.-noon

Information and sign-in table will be open in the Reid Campus Center. Pick up a printed schedule of Family Weekend events and a table for tickets for Varsity Nordic Improv Group and Planetarium shows.

8-8:50 a.m.

All Parents Coffee. Meet other parents and join us for coffee scones and fruit. Reid Campus Center, Café.

9-9:50 a.m.

George Bridges, President of Whitman College, Welcome. Featuring a special performance by The Testostertones. Young Ballroom, Reid Campus Center.

9 a.m. Cross Country Whitman Blue-Gold Race. The Cross Country teams' annual 3K team time trial races. Parents, alumni, staff and faculty are welcome to root for their favorites or to run in the races themselves. Martin Field.
9 a.m.

Walla Walla Crush Run. Experience the thrill of running through vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley. A 5K walk/run or 10K run on a rolling course consisting of both dirt and paved roads that loop around and through the vineyards. Sponsored by the Children’s Home Society of Washington. Farmer’s Market. Featuring late-season produce, Walla Walla gifts and musical entertainment.

10 a.m.- 2 p.m.

The Whitman Fencing Club will hold a demonstration tournament. Front steps of Cordiner Hall.

10 a.m.-noon

Alumni Swim Meet. Watch the current varsity team take on Wiley Alumni swimmers returning from various graduation years. The competition will be both heated and fun! Harvey Pool, Baker Ferguson Fitness Center.

10 a.m.-4 p.m.

HELPLINE/Sigma Chi Silent Wine Auction. Please join the men of Sigma Chi to help raise money for Walla Walla Helpline, a local non-profit that assists community members of Walla Walla who are on the verge of homelessness. We have spent the past few months gathering over 60 bottles of the area’s finest wines to auction off at this event, as well as gift baskets, restaurant gift certificates, etc. All of these items have been generously donated by Walla Walla businesses. Every penny made will be donated to Helpline, which will use the money to operate and support shelters, food banks and other emergency health services in the Walla Walla area. We hope you can join us for this exciting opportunity to support our community and explore the area’s rich wine-making tradition. Reid Campus Center, Room 110.

Parents Encounters Discussion Groups with Prof. Rogers Miles, Dan Kent, and other Encounters faculty. Reading assignment: “Bhagavad-Gita,” Teachings 7-12. All parents are invited to participate. Noon-2 p.m. **Family Open Climb sponsored by the Whitman Outdoor Program. Explore the vertical world of rock climbing at Whitman’s very own Climbing Center. Find out about our facility and learn the basics of climbing. Our friendly student staff will help you find the gear you need and give you some pointers on how to climb. You will be able to climb on belay to the top of our 38-foot wall or scramble around in our bouldering area with spotters and pads. This will be a fun event for all family members ages 6 and up. Whitman College Cycling Club invites you to join them for a 60 to 90 minute ride at a leisurely pace with a possible stop at a local coffee shop following the ride. Participants will need to provide their own bicycles, helmets, etc. Rentals are available at Allegro Cyclery on Main Street. Meeting in front of Reid Campus Center.

**Chemistry Department Open House. Come see what students are doing in General Chemistry Lab! Fun, hands-on lab activities for siblings or parents. Stay for as little or as long as you like. Examples of student work from the Chemistry of Art class will also be on display. Hall of Science, Room 242.

Fifty Trains a Day? Coal Exports, the Columbia Gorge, and a New Era for Mining on the Northern Great Plains. Electricity from coal fired power plants in the United States is on the decline. Yet we have huge reserves of coal in eastern Wyoming and Montana. Should this coal be shipped by train to nearby Umatilla, or to the Oregon coast, or to western Washington, and then across the Pacific Ocean, to supply the huge demand in Asia? Pollution knows no passport. Presented by Senior Lecturer of Environmental Humanities and General Studies Don Snow and Professor of Geology and Environmental Studies Bob Carson. Olin Hall, Room 130.

Family Relief Printmaking Workshop. In this two hour workshop we will explore the art of relief printmaking. Participants will hand carve a design of their choice on a relief block and print it on the printing presses. Whitman printmaking students will also demonstrate relief printmaking on t-shirts and textiles. T-shirts and printing blocks will be provided, or you can bring your own! Participants will leave with both prints on paper and hand-printed t-shirts. The workshop is limited to 25 people, so please reserve your spot by emailing Nicole Pietrantoni at pietran@whitman.edu. **Around the World. The Beyond Borders Club will be offering you a glimpse into the diversity Whitman has to offer. Come play international games, dance to rhythms from the world over and taste some international refreshments. Reid Campus Center, Young Ballroom.

5:30-7 p.m.

Dinner in Prentiss Dining Hall. Family members are invited to enjoy their student’s experience. Special Price: $7 cash for all family members and guests not on a board plan; free for children 5 and under.

6 p.m.

Fall Furr Ball. This benefit supports the Blue Mountain Humane Society in their efforts to prevent cruelty and promote kindness to companion animals in our community. The event features a host social hour, dinner, live and silent auctions, dancing to music from “Penrose Lane” and casino gambling. Tickets are $50 each, and include two bottles of wine for each table of eight guests, social hour and $100 in play gambling money. For tickets and information, visit: www.bluemountainhumane.org. SHAC SpeakEasy Concert. A musical charity concert featuring Whitman’s finest A Cappella Groups. Admission is free, while a $5-$10 donation is recommended. All proceeds will go to the local SOS Healthcare Clinic and to fund future events held by SHAC (Student Health Advisory Council). A great night of music for everyone! Cordiner Hall.
