Foreign Languages (Chinese)

Guidelines for placing yourself in the Chinese Language Classes: 

1. If you
   1. speak basic Mandarin Chinese,
   2. know Pinyin or Bopomofo, and
   3. write 200 characters (traditional or simplified)
   
   then you should wait until the spring semester and register for Chinese 106.
   
   
2. If you cannot do all of the above (1, abc), you should register for Chinese 105.
   
   
3. If you
   1. speak Mandarin Chinese,
   2. know Pinyin or Bopomofo, and
   3. write 300 characters (traditional or simplified)
   
   then you should register for Chinese 205.
   
   
4. If you
   1. communicate well in Mandarin Chinese,
   2. know Pinyin or Bopomofo, and
   3. write 550 characters and above (traditional or simplified)
   
   then you should register for Chinese 305 (if offered) or Chinese 391 (Independent Study, usually 2 credits)
