The Outdoor Program runs climbing trips to local climbing crags on a regular basis, has 1-2 Scramble(s) devoted to rock climbing (First Year Orientation Program), and we offer classes for credit (beginning through advanced). See Outdoor Climbing Areas for more information about local climbing.

The Whitman College Climbing Center is a state-of-the-art climbing wall custom designed by Entre Prises Climbing Walls USA. It is made up of hundreds of imprint and freeform panels that offers a unique climbing experience.

Who can use the climbing wall?
The climbing wall is open to all students, staff, faculty for free and they may bring family members and 2 guests for a small use fee. Alumni are welcome for a small fee per use and can bring family and 2 guests for a small use fee. Children aged 6 to 18 must be accompained by an adult to climb and we require a 2 to 1 children per adult ratio. Arragned climbs for non-profit ogranizations is possible, contact the OP Director for more information.

The Basics Clinic
Learn how to use your harness, belay, and tie the figure eight knot.
Proficiency Tests
Those who wish to top-rope climb, top-rope belay, lead climb, or lead belay must take a proficiency test from a climbing staff member.
Testing is tuesdays and thursdays 6:30-7:30pm during the school year and 7-8pm during the summer.
Costs and Fees:
The climbing wall is open to all students, staff, faculty and is free of charge. Alumni, family of students, staff, faculty and alumni have a day use fee of $7. Guests of students, staff, faculty and almuni have a day use fee of $9. Nominal fees will be charged for clinics, testing, and rentals.
Swipe Cards are available for purchase at the climbing center. Swipe cards come in 5 and 10 swipe increments and swipes do not expire. A 5 swipe card for alumni and family of students, facutly, staff and alumni is $30. A 5 swipe card for guests of students, facutly and staff is $40. A 10 swipe card for alumni and family of students, faculty, staff and alumni is $56. A 10 swipe card for guests of students, facutly and staff is $72. Swipe Card Info.
