Besides leading trips, teaching courses, and renting gear, the OP also supports individual whitman students in their personal support of outdoor adventures. The largest such program directly related to the OP is the climbing program.
Climbing
The Whitman College Outdoor Program is home to one of the largest and most extensive climbing programs in the region. For information on climbing facilities, competitions, services, and equipment, visit the OP Climbing Program webpage.
In addition, though not technically part of the Outdoor Program, there are number of Associated Students of Whitman College (ASWC) funded clubs that pursue and encourage specific outdoor activities. The three most active clubs are listed below.
Hiking
The Whitman College Hiking Club plans, leads, and sponsors adventurous
Whitties on hiking trips throughout the year. The listserv, hiking@lists.whitman.edu,
acts as a network for members to respond to proposed hikes and help
plan them. The Hiking club is for those students who want to get out
and see the wilderness around Whitman while making new friendships with
students who share a passion for hiking and the outdoors. (ASWC-Sponsored Homepage)
Whitewater
The primary purpose of the Whitman College Whitewater Club is to
provide opportunities for the Whitman community to connect to the
sports of whitewater kayaking, canoeing, and rafting, to provide the
skills and training necessary to participate in said activities in a
safe and productive way. One of our goals is to expose the Whitman
community to the whitewater community in general. The club's primary
activities are intermediate and advanced trips (going beyond what
students would be exposed to through WCOP trips), but it also conducts
activities regarding river access, conservation, and ecology. In
addition, we bring whitewater related movies and speakers to campus.
All students of Whitman College interested in the
Whitewater Club are invited to become members. In order to becomes a
member, you just have to come to at least one meeting and join our
listserv. By joinging the listserve you will get emails about trips,
outings, events, meetings, special announcements, etc. Members are
encouraged to come to open kayak hours and weekly polo games at the
BFFC pool. (ASWC-Sponsored Homepage)(Whitman Whitewater Blog)
Snowsports
The Snowsports club will encourage safe skiing and riding as well as
providing funding to students to carpool to local ski resorts. This
will not only help students financially, but will also promote more
environmentally friendly practices. The Snowports club hopes to
collaborate with the Outdoor Program (OP) to help it bring in speakers,
show films, and provide training courses. In addition the Snowsports
club can provide discount passes to its members. The main goal is to
bring the sport of skiing into the financial range of the average
college student. (ASWC-Sponsored Homepage)
