Events marked with an (*) are required for new students.

Thursday, January 10

REID CAMPUS CENTER HOURS:

  • General Building 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Bookstore 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
  • Café 5-7 p.m.
  • Espresso Cart 8:45 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Outdoor Rental Shop 10 a.m.-1 p.m., 2-4 p.m.
  • Post Office 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Business Office Open, Memorial 217.
All bills must be paid or other financial arrangements made before you can get Business Office clearance for final registration.

8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Financial Aid Office Open, Penrose House.
The Financial Aid Office is open if you have questions.

8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. HEALTH CENTER OPEN, Welty Center, 11 Merriam Street
Your health history, TD screen, immunization form and on-line (Quack) insurance enrollment/waiver must be completed and submitted to the Health Center to clear your account.

1-3 p.m. *New Student Check-In/MATRICULATION TASKS, Reid Campus Center Information Desk. Check-in at the Reid Campus Center Information Desk to pick up your new student packet and then complete the following matriculation tasks at the Reid Campus Center: 

  • Photo ID Card, Stevens Gallery, 1st Floor
  • Library Account Activation, Stevens Gallery, 1st floor
  • Voice Recording, room 110, 1st floor
  • Post Office Mailbox, gound floor

1-3 p.m. Refrigerator Rentals, Reid Campus Center Office, room 202.
Small residence hall refrigerators are available to rent for the spring semester.

2-3 p.m. Campus Tour, Penrose House.
Take a walk through the Whitman College campus with a student guide. The tour leaves from Penrose House, 515 Boyer.

3-5 p.m. *Residence Hall Check-In
Residence halls are open for new students to check-in.

6-10 p.m. NIGHT @ rEID, Reid Campus Center Coffeehouse.
Join us for a fiesta dinner, followed by fun and games such as movies, karaoke and/or board games. This will be your first chance to meet the other new January start students, as well as several returning ‘former’ January start students.

Friday, January 11

9-10:30 a.m. *Welcome to Whitman College, Kimball Auditorium, Hunter. Conservatory. A ‘meet and mingle’ breakfast will precede welcoming remarks from President George Bridges, Provost/Dean of Faculty Tim Kaufman-Osborn, and Dean of Students Chuck Cleveland.

10:45-11:45 a.m. *Student Panel Discussion, Kimball Auditorium, Hunter Conservatory.
What is it really like to be a Whitman student? Come ask questions of our student panel, all former January starts themselves, and find out!

Noon-1:15 p.m. *Welcome Lunch for New Students and Families, Reid Campus Center Ballroom. New students and their families are invited to join faculty advisers and administrators for a complimentary lunch.

1:30-2:15 p.m. *GROUP ADVISING, Kimball Auditorium. This session is designed to provide new students with crucial information regarding college policies, advising and registration.

2:30-3:45 p.m. *ACADEMIC ADVISING, advisers’ offices. New students will meet individually with their faculty adviser to discuss classes and plan a spring semester schedule.

4-4:30 p.m. *LIBRARY ORIENTATION, Penrose Library foyer. New students will participate in an orientation and tour of the Penrose Library.

5-6:15 p.m. Dinner, Reid Campus Center Café. For students on a board plan. Students not on a board plan are invited to use flex dollars or cash to purchase a meal.

7:30-8:30 p.m. *GREEN DOT: IT”S WHAT WE DO. What is a Green Dot? Simply an individual choice to make our campus safer. Will you choose to add Green Dots to our campus map? Attend this session and find out all about it.

9-11 p.m. Broom Ball! YWCA Ice Chalet. Come and join us for a Whitman tradition.
Bring tennis/running shoes!

Saturday, January 12

11:00 a.m.-Noon *Introduction to ENCOUNTERS, Olin 155. Encounters professor Chetna Chopra will lead this preliminary session for new students registered for Encounters (General Studies 145). *This session is required only for students enrolled in General Studies 145.

1:30-2:30 p.m. *NEW STUDENT BOOK DISCUSSION FACULTY PANEL, Kimball Auditorium (Hunter). Helen Kim, Associate Professor of Sociology, Doug Scarborough, Assistant Professor of Music and Jim Russo, Associate Professor of BBMB/Health Professions, will share their unique, discipline-specific perspectives on your winter reading, “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson. This session will provide a brief introduction to the intellectual community at Whitman and serve as a springboard for the engaging book discussion to follow.

2:30-3:30 p.m. *NEW STUDENT BOOK DISCUSSION. New students will discuss “The Warmth of Other Suns” by Isabel Wilkerson in small groups with the student academic advisers.

3:45-5 p.m. Downtown Stroll w/Coffee and Hot Chocolate, Reid Campus Center Foyer. Stroll through downtown Walla Walla with our final destination being coffee and hot chocolate at one of the local haunts.

5-7 p.m. Dinner, Reid Campus Center Café.

7:30-8 p.m. *"CONSENT,” Jewett Main Lounge. Please join us for a discussion on the issue of consent as it pertains to Whitman’s sexual misconduct policy. 

8:30 -9:30 p.m. *Introduction to Residence Life, Jewett Main Lounge.
Members of the residence life staff will review information on residence hall life and introduce you to the staff.

9:30 p.m.-Midnight RESIDENCE LIFE GAME NIGHT, Jewett Main Lounge. Join the residence life staff in the Lyman House Main Lounge for an evening of fun, games and food.

Sunday, January 13

7p.m. *VOICES OF WHITMAN,” Jewett Main Lounge. Current students will reflect on their college experiences, sharing with you how Whitman has shaped them, and in turn, how they have shaped Whitman in this celebration of diverse perspectives that define the college. A discussion will follow the “Voices of Whitman” presentation.

8:30 p.m. Residence Hall Activity, Residence Hall Main Lounges.
The residence life staff of each hall has planned an activity for new and returning residents to meet and get acquainted.

Monday, January 14

4-5:30 p.m. STUDENT ACTIVITIES FAIR, Reid Ballroom. Come and see what ways you can get involved! Clubs, the Outdoor Program, service opportunities, and more will be available to discuss their organizations and have sign ups and more information.

Wednesday, January 16

4-5pm *CAMPUS RESOURCES HUNT, Academic Resource Center (Memorial 205). Wondering where to rent outdoor gear or who to talk to about community service in Walla Walla? This campus wide quest with your spring SA and other January start students will help you discover the offices and people that can answer these and the many other questions that will arise as you get situated to learning and living at Whitman.
