Whitman Merit Scholarships and Need-based Aid

Partner Programs

Merit Scholarships

Students attending international and U.S. based Partner Programs may apply their Whitman merit scholarships toward the fees of the program. The merit scholarship award amount will remain the same as when the student is on campus at Whitman, except if the award amount exceeds the total cost of the off-campus program.

Need-based Aid

Students attending Partner Programs may apply their Whitman need-based aid to the fees of their program. Need-based financial aid for students on Partner Programs is based on the actual program costs, not on the Whitman fees. For the purposes of financial aid award calculations, the student and parent contribution usually will remain the same as if the student is on campus. If the program a student attends is less expensive than Whitman, then the student's financial aid award will be reduced accordingly. However, the College does include estimates for airfare, meals and other basic allowable expenses when considering the total cost of the program.

The financial aid award from Whitman will not be increased if the program a student attends is more expensive than Whitman. Students should plan to cover the difference between the program costs and Whitman costs from their own resources or from outside scholarships.

Students who receive need-based aid from Whitman College are encouraged to meet with the staff of Financial Aid Services (in Penrose House) to discuss their financial aid packages for off-campus studies.

Approved Programs and Petitioned Programs

Neither Whitman merit scholarships nor Whitman need-based aid may be applied to the fees of Approved Programs and Petitioned Programs. Students with federal and/or state aid, including Stafford Loans, usually can apply their federal and state funds to the fees of Approved Programs and Petitioned Programs.  You should consult with the Whitman Office of Financial Aid Services for details.
