Also in attendance were five members of last semester’s Politics 406 class, which wrote “The State of the State for Washington Latinos,” a 400-page report on social conditions for Latinos in Washington. They discussed issues such as voter registration, political involvement and outreach to the Latino community with the Secretary and with Karen Martin, Walla Walla County Auditor. “Good for you,” the Secretary said to junior Lazaro Carrion, of Yakima, who told Reed that he and some of his classmates had gone over voting records one name at a time to cull information about numbers of Latinos on the voting rolls.
In response
to student questions about outreach programs to improve Latino registration,
Martin told students that such outreach is limited not because of lack of
interest but because of limited funding. She welcomed concerned students to
volunteer in her office. “We can work together to get this done,” she said.
After the breakfast meeting, Mr. Reed and several students were interviewed by reporters from the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin and KEPR TV, a CBS affiliate located in the Tri-Cities.
