Lori Bettison-Varga to become president of Scripps College

Saturday, Mar 28, 2009

Dear Whitman Colleagues and Friends:

With much gratitude for her contributions to Whitman and with best wishes for her future success, I write to inform you that Provost and Dean of Faculty Lori Bettison-Varga has been elected as the next president of Scripps College, in Claremont, Calif., effective July 1, 2009.

As many of you know, Lori has close family ties to Scripps and envisions serving as its president as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A member of the Claremont Colleges consortium and the premier women’s college in the West, Scripps offers a challenging academic curriculum and extensive co-curricular programs for its students.

Although Scripps’ gain clearly is Whitman’s loss, we must take great pride in knowing that Lori, as our colleague, was elected to lead this prestigious institution.  She will provide the Scripps community with dynamic, talented and energetic leadership to carry on its mission, leaving behind at Whitman a record of significant accomplishment in her short tenure.

In the next few days I will share more about this news and the process we will follow in moving forward. Of course, you also will be hearing from Lori. In the meantime, I hope you’ll join me in expressing congratulations to her.
