Top “Back to School” News at Whitman College

 

MOVE-IN DAY – Thursday, Aug 25 – 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

WHAT: More than 400 first-year students, most with help from their families, will move into their new home-away-from-home. These students represent 36 states and 4 countries: China, Canada, Lesotho and South Africa. More stats:

  • 35 are first-generation students (8%)
  • 49 have a sibling, parent, or grandparent who attends or attended Whitman (12%)
  • 14 have another relative who attended Whitman (3%)
  • 60 are recruited athletes (14%)
  • 11 are recruited artists (3%)
  • 47 are high school valedictorians (11%)
  • 3 are from Walla Walla county

VISUALS: Students and families lugging college-life “essentials”: guitars, stuffed animals, mini-fridges, bedding, and plenty more.

 

WHITMAN IN THE WORLD: 32 MOVE BACK IN; 58 EMBARK ON OFF-CAMPUS STUDIES

WHAT: While 32 students return from summer programs, including Whitman Summer Studies in China, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, Whitman in the Wallowas and a Pollination Biology course in Sweden, 58 head out for new domestic and international adventures.

WHERE: Destinations of choice this year include Morocco, Ecuador, India, Israel, Kenya, Peru, South Africa, the Caribbean and many more. Three students will also participate in urban internship programs in Chicago and Philadelphia this fall.

 

THE SHOW MUST GO ON (IN ENHANCED FACILITIES) – HARPER JOY THEATRE CONSTRUCTION COMPLETED FOR 2011-2012 SEASON

WHAT: Renovations to Harper Joy Theatre are now complete. The upgraded facility boasts a new black box theatre, a lighting lab, new prop shop and new costume shop. The entrance and lobby also have been expanded.
