Women XC win Walla Walla Invite

Walla Walla, Wash. - The Whitman Women’s Cross Country team took 1st place in the 2012 Whitman Invitational at Fort Walla Walla this Saturday. Seniors Emilie Gilbert, Katri Gilbert, and Shannon McCarty paced the Missionaries, finishing 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively. Kelsey Klettke from Lewis-Clark State finished 1st with a time of 23:41.15. Whitman won the team event with 31 points, LC State finished 2nd overall with 39 points, and Pacific Lutheran finished 3rd with a total of 62 points.
Whitman, ranked 5th in the West Region, showed their experience in defeating two strong Northwest Cross-Country Teams. Emilie Gilbert, coming off a victory in this race a year ago, finished with a time of 24:15.81. Katri Gilbert, crossed the finish line 12 seconds behind her and McCarty came in 11 seconds after Katri.
Lewis-Clark State’s teams, ranked #8 in the country among NAIA colleges, were led by Kelsey Klettke and Chelsey Leighton who finished 1st and 2nd. Pacific Lutheran’s best runner, Amanda Seely finished 6th with a time of 24:46.18.
Whitman’s next event is in two weeks at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash. on September 15th.
