Whitman College commencement ceremonies Sunday, May 24, will honor about 350 graduating seniors and feature a commencement address, “The Long War,” by former Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, a 1971 Whitman graduate. Ceremonies, which begin at 11 a.m. on Memorial lawn, next to Boyer Avenue, will include the traditional pomp and circumstance, colorful academic regalia, announcement of secondary school teaching awards, and a senior speaker elected by classmates to represent them at the podium. The increasing scope of the celebration and number of activities scheduled for Earth Week are the primary changes from last year’s event. “Earth Day is a long standing tradition at Whitman,” Rokpelnis said. “But there is a particular focus this year on cooperation between the campus environmental groups and other organizations.” As part of this effort to expand local outreach, the Center for Community Service is combining with students from Walla Walla University (WWU) and Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) to host a service day on Sunday, Apr. 19, followed by the all campus celebration in the afternoon.
