Alex Graves

Meet Alex Graves. She's a senior biology major and All-Northwest Conference outside hitter on the volleyball team.

After earning Academic All-District honors as a junior, she spent the spring 2009 semester on foreign study in Madrid, Spain.

Earlier in her Whitman career, she spent one of her summers in Buenos Aires, Argentina, interning at a free medical clinic. Graves is pursuing a minor in Spanish and plans to focus her graduate school studies on the biotech field.

Christoph Fuchs

Meet Christoph Fuchs. A key contributor on the NWC champion men's tennis team, Fuchs is also a senior biology major (chemistry minor) and recipient of Academic All-District honors.

Fluent in German, Fuchs was a volunteer nurse's aide at a hospital in Offenburg, Germany during the summer of 2007. He recently wrote his senior thesis on breast cancer research he did at the University of Louisville cancer center during the summer of 2008.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he plans to enroll in medical school after playing a final season of tennis in the spring of 2010.

Balanced & multidimensional. Whitman student athletes exemplify the balanced, multidimensional nature of the Whitman experience. They are devoted athletes, but their love for sport is matched by their passion for the arts and sciences, for social activism and volunteerism, for participating in our fraternities and sororities, for playing leadership roles in student government, and for taking advantage of all the study abroad, internship, and research opportunities Whitman offers.

Competitive athletes. Whitman student-athletes are respected competitors at the NCAA Division III level within the Northwest Conference in nine men’s and nine women’s athletic programs. In recent years, Whitman varsity squads have won conference championships in men’s tennis and women’s basketball, and the men's soccer team fell one game short of a title in the fall of 2008.

They also earn admission to some of the most prestigious graduate and professional programs in the nation. “From our varsity sports and physical education classes to intramural and club sports, at Whitman, athletics is well-integrated into our overall academic mission,” explains Athletic Director Dean Snider. “We have an outstanding group of coaches who consider themselves to be educators, and rightly so. Because what they pursue is excellence, in the field or in the classroom. And they work very, very hard at what they do.”

This is why Whitman coaches often require athletes to study for an exam or write a paper while traveling for away-games. It is also why the average GPA and retention rate for student-athletes at Whitman is sometimes higher than that of the general student population.
