Mignon Borleske
As the young spouse of R.V. Borleske, a Whitman sports legend in the making, Mignon Borleske came to campus in the fall of 1915 when her husband was hired to coach the major sports and serve as athletic director at his alma mater. She taught dance and women’s physical education classes at Whitman for nearly four decades.
Born Mignon Kay in San Francisco in 1892, she moved as a child to Seattle, where she graduated from high school and met her future husband. She attended graduate school at the University of California-Berkeley, at least in part to prepare for her role as physical education instructor. She also had a strong interest in languages and could speak Hebrew, Greek, Latin and French. She died in October 1969 at the age of 77.
