Movement That Matters
Wellness Program Exercise Classes & MORE!
for the staff and faculty of Whitman College
Enrollment Fee: $45 per 15-week session (on average) • 75 classes per session
THREE separate sessions are offered per school year ($45 enrollment fee for each session):
Fall semester, Spring semester, and Summer
Download the printable enrollment form (PDF) and send it via Campus Mail to the Business Office (Mem 233) along with your check for $45 made out to “Whitman College” (please drop off cash in person).
Family members who have Whitman ID cards are also welcome to sign up for classes and are expected to also pay the $45 enrollment fee.
Please NOTE: the only class that is limited by equipment is spinning, so those classes are conducted on a First-Come-First-Serve basis. Paying the enrollment fee does NOT guarantee that there will be room in the class!
On the day of spinning class, participants are asked to call the BFFC service desk (526-4729), and sign up for that day. The first 11 people to call will be ‘enrolled’ for that day. If you didn’t call in time to get a spot in class, you are welcome to dress for the class and go to BFFC—after 10 minutes of class, any no-show’s will give up their spots to walk-in’s.
NEW!! Climbing Wall Hour for Staff & Faculty Only: Come climb at Whitman’s Beginner-friendly climbing wall without the usual crowds of students on Fridays from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Please note that this is not a class per se, as there will be no instructor.

CLASSES:
Core Conditioning with Body Sculpting
A full body experience designed to build some muscle! With the use of resistance bands, physio balls, dumbbell weights and medicine balls, this fast paced and intense class is full of upper and lower body strength training, cardio, core and plyometric drills guaranteed to start your week the right way! What are you waiting for?
Instructor Stephen Garnett comes to Walla Walla from Arizona where he was a basketball and strength and conditioning coach for the last six years. He's an assistant coach on the Whitman men’s basketball team. Stephen is the founder/instructor of Overtime Training, an intense basketball program he created to work with the youth in the area on strengthening their skills but most importantly boost their confidence to an “I CAN” approach as opposed to “I think.” Garnett, a true fitness enthusiast, loves testing limits when it comes to physical training--from free weights to body weight push-ups, he's always trying to find new ways to make workouts as challenging and intense as possible!
Yoga
Take time to gently stretch and relax through yoga poses that encourage the release of tension and the mind to let go. A focus on the breath (Prayanama) and traditional yoga poses (asanas) this class will start with a warm-up, move through Hatha yoga poses, some balance poses, and then end with meditation and relaxation (mindful consciousness). This class is designed for the busy person to relax and be refreshed, as well as give you a renewed sense of energy. Basic poses keep the class simple by design, but also allow anyone from novice to advanced practitioner to get into the yoga zone as you nurture mind, body and soul. Be forewarned: this class is addictive ... try it, we know you will love it!
Yoga Instructor Elizabeth Sparks has been practicing yoga since 1994, and teaching it since 2009. She completed her 200-hour teacher training through YogaFit® and is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher. Her varied background in movement includes experience instructing strength, conditioning, and dance, as well as yoga. Elizabeth’s teaching style is somewhat eclectic, with an emphasis on vinyasa style yoga – matching breath with movement to quiet the mind and rejuvenate the body. She enjoys sharing her love of yoga to students of all levels and abilities in a friendly environment.
Spinning
Spin your legs on an exercise bike while music is beating and hearts are pumping! Enjoy the ride as your instructor takes you through various workout phases of warm-up, up-tempo cadence, sprints, climbs and jumps. You control the resistance on your bike, so you can make it as hard or easy as you prefer. Due to equipment restrictions, this class is limited to 11 participants on a sign-in sheet the day of class (call the BFFC service desk 526-4729 to sign up; first-come-first-serve). Accordingly, this class is limited to those who have paid the $45 registration fee—no guests please.
Instructor: Robert Street, Whitman varsity swimming alum and current Admissions Officer
CLIMBING WALL:
Come climb at Whitman’s new, beginner-friendly wall without the usual crowds of students! You can climb with a partner on the vertical wall if you've already passed the top-rope climb and belay test. Even with no previous climbing experience, you can climb up the vertical wall with the auto belays. Equipment rentals are available at the wall but the cost is not included in the Movement That Matters registration fee (climbing shoes $3.50, harness $2.50, belay device $1).
The climbing wall is open to all students, staff and faculty for free! In addition to the hours that are open to all, the Movement That Matters program has arranged for one hour per week to be staff-and-faculty-only (see MTM session calendar, above). Please note that this is NOT a class, but simply an extra hour during the week that the wall is open for use by staff & faculty.
Please take a moment before you show up at the wall to familiarize yourself with the Rules & Policies of the Climbing Center. You will be asked to read and sign a Liability Waiver (available online for your preview). Bouldering is allowed without any equipment or training, but if you wish to engage in roped climbing, you must undergo a proficiency check and/or attend a basics clinic (see clinics schedule).
If you find that you love climbing and want MORE, please contact Sarah Hurlburt (at hurlbuse@whitman.edu) for information on a newly developed staff and faculty Climbing Club. This program proposes a once-a-week, 11-week course to be taught by a climbing wall student instructor for $85, which includes rental gear. This fee includes the basics clinic and belay test, which usually costs $15.
