As an employee, you may attend the intercollegiate athletic events held on campus. Your Whitman College I.D. card will admit you and members of your immediate family without charge.
Sherwood Center is available for employee use during certain times. A schedule may be obtained from the athletic office. Gymnasiums, racquetball courts, tennis courts, workout rooms, a swimming pool, and other athletic facilities are available free for employee use by arrangement with the athletic department office.
Bratton Tennis Center provides four indoor tennis courts for campus and community use. Regular staff and their immediate family members are eligible to schedule court time. Valid Whitman I.D. cards are required and court fees will be charged. Contact Bratton Tennis Center or the Sherwood Center Athletic Office concerning guidelines for use of the tennis center.
Once a grand private residence, Baker Faculty Center now serves as a quiet social center for faculty and staff of the College. During the academic year, BFC opens for lunch from 11:30 A.M. to 1:15 P.M. Catering for college-related activities is also available, and catering for off-campus events, such as receptions, can be arranged. Two meeting rooms upstairs in BFC are available by reservation for small gatherings (2-15 people), perfect for lunch meetings and dinner celebrations. Call Bon Appetit Catering on campus at extension 5127 to make the arrangements.
Guest rooms for guests of the College are scheduled through the Scheduling Office during the academic year and through the Summer Programs Office during summer months.
Located in the Reid Campus Center, the bookstore carries textbooks and a wide variety of trade titles and general reading books in paper and hardback editions. Whitman employees receive a 20% discount on trade titles and general reading books. Special book orders are welcome. The bookstore also stocks office supplies, art supplies, cards, stationery, clothing, imprinted gifts, and sundry items.

Many offices and departments produce brochures, calendars, newsletters, and other communications which give information about plays, concerts, lectures, College policies, employee matters, and subjects of general interest. In addition, the student newspaper, "The Pioneer," explores many topics of current concern on the campus.
Bon Appetit is on campus, ready to assist the Whitman community, its guests and friends with every detail of each special event whether it’s a small coffee service or large formal dinner. Choose from many special event locations both indoors and outdoors, or something off campus. Contact the Catering Department in Prentiss Dining Room at Extension 5127 for menus and prices.
The College maintains a small two-bedroom cabin on 30 acres along Mill Creek approximately 20 miles from campus. Although students are given priority during the academic year, the cabin is available for a fee during breaks and throughout the summer for staff and faculty. Arrangements for the cabin can be made through the Scheduling Office in the Reid Campus Center.
The College maintains a limited number of vehicles to be used for official College business. Scheduling is handled by the secretary in the Physical Plant.
If you choose to use your personal vehicle for College business travel, you must provide your own insurance protection. The College insurance policy will only provide coverage if you are using a College vehicle or renting a vehicle for College business. When transporting Whitman students, you must always use a College vehicle or rent a vehicle.
Whitman College requires an annual review of driving records for anyone operating a College vehicle on a weekly basis and for drivers of College-owned vans or rental vans used to transport students. In addition, van drivers must participate in a training program for van drivers and be certified by the Safety Coordinator. Contact the Safety Department with questions.
The Health Center staff are available to evaluate and treat minor emergencies, monitor blood pressure, give advice, and provide referrals to community medical facilities as needed. Since the Health Center primarily serves students, appointments for staff are requested except in emergency situations.
The Human Resources staff, located in Memorial 102, can assist you with questions regarding benefits, salary, and employment policies. The staff are also available to assist in the mediation of conflicts in the work environment.
A photo I.D. card is issued to each regular staff member. These cards can be used to receive free admission to campus athletic events, to purchase discounted tickets for a variety of selected campus activities, to receive a 20% discount on trade and general reading books at the bookstore, to use Bratton Tennis Center, as a library card when a library bar code has been attached to the back of the card, and to gain after-hours accesstovarious buildings. The Human Resources office provides information on obtaining an I.D. card. Cards must be returned to the Human Resources upon termination of employment.
Regular employees of the College are given free use of Penrose Library. The total library collections of the College consist of some 355,000 books, 2,000 active subscriptions to journals and newspapers, one-half million U.S. government documents, and some 11,300 reels of microfilm. The library’s participation in the Orbis Cascade Alliance gives patronsaccess to materials in libraries throughout the Northwest.
Staff must register with the Library Circulation Desk before checking out library materials. A library bar code will be attached to your Whitman photo I.D. card.
A lost and found service is located in the Reid Campus Center Office. All found items should be turned in promptly.
Mail service is provided daily to all campus buildings. The campus post office, located in the Reid Campus Center, provides easy transmittal of business mail from one campus location to another, in most cases twice daily during the academic year. Distribution Services, in the Boyer House provides service for outgoing U.S. Mail, Federal Express, and UPS.
Several notaries public are located on campus. Please refer to the "Campus Offices and Services" section of the Campus Directory for names, locations, and phone numbers.
Located in the Reid Campus Center, the Outdoor Program is a resource through which students, faculty and staff may organize a variety of outdoor activities including the rental of outdoor equipment. The program provides a wide variety of outdoor safety courses from elementary to advanced and provides guest speakers, slide shows and special programs.
There is no charge for campus parking. The College takes precautions to help protect the property of employees on campus by lighting the parking areas and providing security officers to patrol and check on parked cars; however, each employee retains full responsibility for his or her own vehicle and for any parking penalties, liability, or damage claims resulting from possession or operation of a motor vehicle on campus.
The Production Services Department, located in Boyer House, provides design, layout, photocopy, and bindery services for departments, faculty, staff, and students. Projects include large-quantity runs of course materials, full-color posters, and saddle-stitched booklets.
The Scheduling Office is located in the Reid Campus Center and schedules the use of campus facilities including College Cabin and the Baker Faculty Center guest rooms. This office should be contacted before scheduling any event to reserve the date, time, and location.
Security escorts are provided on campus for students, faculty and staff from 7 P.M. to 3 A.M., seven days a week during the academic year. To arrange an escort anywhere within a two-block radius of campus boundaries, call the Department of Security at extension 5777.
Security phones (blue-light phones) are located throughout the campus. These can be used for emergency calls or brief (two minutes) calls to a campus phone extension. Instructions are located on the phones and in the front of the campus directory.
The Student Activities Office assists students with planning and participating in activities of their interest. The office is an umbrella organization for many groups, and assists students in creating new activity or interest groups. It is an excellent information center for both on-campus and off-campus activities and events.
Whitman’s drama department is recognized as one of the leading theater programs in the West. Each season offers a wide variety of plays, ranging from classics and contemporary drama to musical comedy and opera. The Harper Joy Theatre facility features the 315-seat Alexander Stage and the smaller,experimental Freimann Stage. Season tickets are available at discounted rates for staff during the first semester of the academic year.
