O’Donnell Visiting Professorships for 2009-10
On behalf of the Global Studies Steering Committee, I request proposals for projects to be supported by the Ashton J. and Virginia Graham O’Donnell Visiting Professorship in Global Studies Endowment during the 2009-10 academic year. The purpose of this endowment is to create a program of O’Donnell Visiting Educators (OVEs). These are individuals who have experience in international affairs, principally from the standpoint of the practitioner. (Individuals who are purely academics are less desirable as OVEs, although an academic who has had significant applied experience in international subjects might be appropriate.) An OVE may be someone who has international experience in any of a variety of areas, including international business, diplomacy, social movements, environmental regulation, immigration, engineering, medicine, development, the arts or other areas involving international study.

Proposals:

Your proposal should have three basic parts:

  1. A Cover Letter that explains how a candidate fits the guidelines of the endowment, accompanied by a current Curriculum Vitae.
  2. A description of the nature of the visit, its educational merits, and how our students will be encouraged to participate. This should include a list of proposed activities on campus, such as: A semester-length course that meets once or twice a week, a workshop of a particular length, a lecture or series of lectures, etc.
  3. A budget that includes your expected compensation (please see suggested rates below) and travelling expenses. Lodging, food and other campus expenses can be worked out later.

In evaluating requests, the Committee will consider the length and depth of the interaction between students and the proposed OVE. OVEs may come to campus for periods ranging from a single lecture to a full semester; in general, longer visits will be preferred over shorter visits.

The Committee recognizes that many OVEs are not able to come to the College for a full semester, but might be persuaded to come for a shorter visit of a week or two. To enable students to secure credit for academic work done in conjunction with such visits, the faculty has adopted the following course: Interdisciplinary Studies 400, O’Donnell Endowment – Special Topics in Applied International Studies. These classes are offered for a single, un-graded credit. Typically, an OVE who spends a week or two at the College will teach classes in relevant course(s), give a public address, visit other appropriate courses, and/or make him or herself available to students and faculty who are interested in the OVE’s area of expertise.

Compensation:

The following are meant to be rough estimates of the usual compensation amount for an OVE. The figures are negotiable based on the qualifications and experience of applicants:

Length of Visit   OVE Compensation
Single lecture   $2,000
Workshop (e.g., 1-2 weeks)   $5,000
Semester-long visit   $50,000
