SURF/NIST (Boulder)

Eligibility requirements:
• The program is open to United States citizens and permanent residents.
• Applicants must be undergraduates at a U.S. university or college with a technical major.
• Applicants must be covered by health insurance through their school or family.
• A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (out of 4.0) or better is recommended. Students with physics, materials science, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, or engineering majors are encouraged to apply. There may be research opportunities for students with other majors.
• New applicants must be enrolled to continue their undergraduate education for fall 2013. Previous SURF NIST Boulder participants who will graduate in spring 2013 are also eligible.
Award summary and conditions: Boulder, Colorado, Laboratories' National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program provides research experience for students majoring in science, mathematics, and engineering. Opportunities are available in the fields of:
· Chemical Science and Technology
· Electronics and Electrical Engineering
· Information Technology
· Materials Science and Engineering
· Physics
Benefits include an allowance for travel and housing as well as a stipend. The SURF NIST Boulder Program will run from late May to early August, 2013; adjustments may be made to accommodate specific academic schedules (e.g., quarter systems).

Application materials:
• resume
• two letters of recommendation
• transcripts (unofficial copies acceptable)
• personal statement of commitment to participate and description of prioritized research interest
• verification of U.S. citizenship or permanent legal residence, (e.g. copy of birth certificate, passport, or green card)
• institutional application: The student's university must submit a grant proposal that provides details about its academic program and must nominate one or more students. Inclusion of a narrative on each student is encouraged.
Selection process: Offers will be made beginning around February 25. Because we use a waiting list, successful applicants must accept or decline within 7 days of receiving an offer.
