Eligibility Requirements:

• citizenship in the home country
• full-time undergraduate student in good standing, in any field of study
• superior academic achievement. There is no GPA requirement, though an impressive GPA will strengthen any application.
• proficiency in English. Proficiency in French is required to study at Francophone universities.
• nominated by home university

Award summary and benefits: The fellowship offers students an opportunity to experience the Canadian culture, study at world-class research opportunities, and transfer credits that are part of their degree requirements in their programs at their home institutions. Benefits include:

• US$10,000 for the full academic year, or US$5,000 for one semester
• $500 in the host country's denomination for Health Insurance Allowance
• $800 in the host country's denomination for in-country travel allowance
• Fall Killam Orientation in Ottawa, ON (travel costs, room and board)
• Spring Seminar in Washington, DC (travel costs, room and board)

A limited amount of funds are available on a competitive, need-determined basis to students from private universities to help offset tuition differentials.

Applicants to the open competition may be students currently enrolled at any degree granting institution in the United States (including the participating universities) and be applying to any degree granting institution (including the participating colleges and universities) in Canada.  Applicants are responsible for applying to three Canadian universities.  Be aware that those application deadlines may precede the Killam deadline.

A complete application consists of the following components:

• a completed coversheet and checklist
• a completed, signed and dated Killam Fellowships Program application form
• a personal statement (one, single-spaced page maximum)
• a course selection for each institution for which you want to be considered, approved by a student advisor at your home university
• an official university transcript in a sealed envelope
• a photocopy of your passport (preferable), birth certificate, or other documentation that verifies citizenship
• two reference forms in sealed envelopes with the signature of the referees on the seals. At least one reference should be from a university professor familiar with the student’s work
• a curriculum vitae (maximum three pages)
• a report on English language proficiency if your first language is not English and you are not currently studying at an English-language institution
• a report on French language proficiency if your first language is not French and you plan to study at a Francophone university

Note:  In addition the Fellowships and Grants Office will require proof that the “Off-Campus Study Leave” application (http://www.whitman.edu/contents/ocs) has been filed with the Off Campus Study Office by the internal deadline.

All applications will be thoroughly reviewed and the applicants ranked by an independent adjudication committee comprised of faculty members from participating universities and senior officials from the Foundation. The committee will rank all candidates based on their proposed program of study, their personal statement, their record of academic achievement, and their letters of reference. The committee will produce a list of recommended candidates, which will include alternates. This list will form the basis for all award decisions.
