To provide a full range of biological topics to readers, BIOS also carries overviews of graduate research, articles written by faculty and invited authors, and book reviews. BIOS is published in March, May, September, and December. Student authored undergraduate research articles in biology are reviewed by college and university faculty. Some expenses are apparently associated with publication; these are reduced if author is a society member.
- Eastern Oregon Science Journal

Students who submit papers to the Science Journal also learn about the editing and publishing process. The subject matter of the paper is open to any area of pure or applied physics or physics related field. Each paper must be sponsored by a full-time faculty member of the department in which the research was done. JYI provides opportunities for students to participate in the scientific review and publication processes, primarily through the operation of its peer-reviewed journal for undergraduates. Incorporated as a non-profit, entirely student-run corporation, JYI's staff members currently represent over 30 different academic institutions. JYI's web journal (which is also called JYI) is dedicated to the presentation of undergraduate research in science, mathematics, and engineering. It publishes the best submissions from undergraduates, with an emphasis on both the quality of research and the manner in which it is communicated.
- Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Devoted entirely to papers written by undergraduates on topics related to mathematics. Although the authors need not be undergraduates at the time of submission or publication, the work must have been completed before graduation. The journal will be distributed freely in an electronic format (PDF) from the journal's web site. In order to maintain a high level of exposition, each paper must be sponsored by a mathematician familiar with the student's work and each paper will be refereed. Topics for papers may come from many sources. For example, REU programs generate interesting, and often, original work. Many departments of mathematics require senior projects or papers. Presentations at undergraduate mathematics conferences could be expanded and made suitable for publication. Work from summer internships requiring mathematical tools also might be appropriate for publication. Although the paper need not contain original research in mathematics, it must be interesting, well written, and at a level that is clearly beyond a typical homework assignment. Readers of the journal should expect to see new results, new and interesting proofs of old results, historical developments of a theorem or area of mathematics, or interesting applications of mathematics.
- Undergraduate Research Conference for the Human Sciences, Undergraduate Research Journal for the Human Sciences
An opportunity for undergraduate researchers in the “human sciences” (apparently: natural sciences, engineering, and psychology) to present their research; sponsored by the Undergraduate Research Community for the Human Sciences (URC). - Journal for Undergraduate Research Oportunities at University of Georgia
JURO@GA is one of the nation’s only undergraduate research journals for the arts and the humanities. For its national online issue, JURO requires that the undergraduate submitting his or her paper have presented it at the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), held annually. JURO@GA continues to challenge the conventional boundaries of a research journal. It is currently expanding its horizons to include mixed media, drama and dance. Although this isn’t entirely clear from JURO’s website, undergraduates from across the nation may submit to the journal.
- Mother Jones
This bimonthly magazine has a circulation of 180,000 and focuses on publishing investigative reports and journalistic exposés in social issues and public affairs. Think Michael Moore. They invite “thoughtful, provocative articles which challenge the conventional wisdom (on the right or the left).” Mother Jones is concerned with issues of national importance (such as the environment, the media, health care, consumer protection, and cultural trends).
You must submit a query letter pitching your story / article idea before you submit the manuscript. Please refer to guidelines at http://www.motherjones.com/about/admin/mag_guidelines.html.
- National Conferences on Undergraduate Research
NCUR’s three-day annual conference is “the most important and visible undergraduate research conference in the United States.” This gathering of young scholars welcomes presenters from all institutions of higher learning and from all corners of the academic curriculum. About 2,000 student presentations from around 250 institutions are selected from among thousands of undergraduate scholars and artists. The conference is interdisciplinary, with its largest number of presentations in the social sciences, followed closely by the natural sciences, humanities, and arts, in that order. The majority of presenters are seniors (about 65%); about 20% are juniors; the remaining presenters are freshmen and sophomores. Graduate schools send representatives to this conference. A small fee is associated with submission.
NCUR allows the following types of presentations: oral, poster board, and presentations in the visual arts (drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, video, film) and performing arts (music composition, performance, and research; solo or small ensemble dance performance in modern dance, jazz, or ballet; and theater monologues or scenes). An abstract is required of presenters in the visual and performing arts. Studio artists are required to give a 15 minute oral presentation at the conference with (digital) slides, covering visual research questions, methodology (which may include the historical progression of the work), outcomes, and possibly visual connections with other artists. If research concerns a foreign language (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish), presenter may submit the abstract and present in that language.

Social Sciences
- Eastern Oregon Science Journal
Since 1983 EOSJ has provided a unique opportunity for undergraduate science students to publish results of their summer internships or faculty-sponsored research. Each year the Science Journal features student authors from various scientific disciplines, including psychology and anthropology.
- International Affairs Journal Quarterly
The International Affairs Journal at UC Davis is comprised of articles and research by students with a range of multidisciplinary perspectives on issues of concern in the international arena. Articles are intended for an educated, yet multidisciplinary audience, and thus highly technical locution and equations are discouraged. We are committed to offering publishing opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate students. To that end, we strongly encourage undergraduate students to submit papers to the IAJ. The IAJ is published quarterly, and accepts articles from undergraduate and graduate students from any accredited university in the world. While each issue has a Forum where articles on all subjects are welcome, the IAJ also provides the opportunity for authors to explore a particular “Regional Spotlight,” announced for coming issues.
- Issues in Political Economy
Committed to supporting and encouraging quality undergraduate research in all areas of economics. Now in its 14th volume, the Journal was founded on the belief that the best way to learn economics is to do economics. Through the process of research, writing, and peer review, students actively engage the discipline in a way not possible by simply listening to lectures and reading textbooks. In short, undergraduate research is a vital component in an economics education. The literature suggests that students take projects more seriously and learn more when the project is directed towards an external rather than an internal audience such as a class assignment. IPE is designed to provide an external audience for such research. Issues in Political Economy is edited and refereed entirely by students, with oversight from faculty at the University of Mary Washington and Elon University. In order to maintain quality and objectivity, we follow a double-blind review process. The only requirements for submission are that the article pertains to some aspect of economics, that it was written during undergraduate study, and that it be submitted through a faculty sponsor. Though submissions on all topics in economics will receive consideration, papers should be analytical and seek to add new understanding to the topic.
- Journal of Psychological Inquiry
Encourages undergraduate students to submit manuscripts for consideration. Manuscripts may include empirical studies, literature reviews, and historical articles; manuscripts may cover any topical area in the psychological sciences. Manuscripts must have an undergraduate as the primary author. Graduate students or faculty may be co-authors if their role was one of teacher or mentor versus full fledged collaborator. Manuscripts must have been accepted for or presented at the meeting of the Great Plains Students’ Psychological Convention, the Association for Psychological and Educational Research in Kansas, the Nebraska Psychological Society, the Arkansas Symposium for Psychology Students, or the ILLOWA Undergraduate Psychology Conference.

Submissions must be the original work of the author and sent from the author's originating mail server. The opinions expressed in any given article do not necessarily reflect those of the Editorial Board of the Michigan Journal of Political Science.
