Whitman’s Faculty

As a Whitman student, you’ll be inspired by the depth of knowledge, the breadth of interests, and the scholarly and creative achievements of the professors.

Dedicated teachers. Our full-time faculty comprises 175 dynamic and experienced professors. While many of them have earned national recognition for their scholarship, what truly sets them apart is their passion for teaching and mentoring their students. A 9-to-1 student-faculty ratio, an average class size of 17, and the fact that most Whitman faculty live in neighborhoods close to campus mean that as a Whitman student, you’ll develop deep and productive intellectual and professional relationships with your professors.

You’ll interact closely with them in the classroom. Work with them on real-world research projects. Accompany them on exciting study-abroad trips around the world. You’ll also run into them on and off campus at events.

Renowned scholars. They are accessible, supportive and involved. They are dedicated mentors. But as a student here, you’ll quickly discover that Whitman professors are also uncompromising when it comes to academic rigor. They create an environment that encourages you to ask questions, to take intellectual risks, to pursue new insights and make new connections, often across disciplines. But they also demand 100 percent commitment and dedication to scholarship of the highest quality—both from their students as well as from themselves. This is one reason why they also continue to develop their own research, professional, and pedagogical skills through the discussions, lectures, workshops, and seminars organized at Whitman’s Center for Teaching and Learning.

Professional honors. Not surprisingly, Whitman faculty regularly receive grants and fellowships from a variety of prestigious national and regional organizations, including:

  • Battelle Research Institute
  • Fulbright Fellows Program
  • Howard Hughes Medical Institute
  • Luce Foundation
  • National Endowment for the Arts
  • National Endowment for the Humanities
  • National Institutes of Health
  • National Science Foundation
  • PEW Charitable Trust
  • William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
