Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 21, 2008
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
In celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and work, Whitman College is holding a symposium to bring all of us together as a community to continue and expand upon discussions that came out of last year's symposium on race relations and community. We hope that this year's symposium will inspire critical thought and understanding and lead to greater awareness of a wide range of issues that affect the individuals of the Whitman community.
We are calling for proposals for workshops, presentations, and lectures for the afternoon of January 21, 2008 by students, faculty and staff. This year's title is deliberately broad and we encourage everyone to think about how it is personally meaningful to them as individuals and members of this intellectual community. The structure of this year's symposium will be very similar to that of last year's symposium, with a plenary session in the morning, workshops/presentations to follow and Patricia Williams, author of The Alchemy of Race and Rights, as the keynote speaker in the evening.
Everyone is encouraged to submit proposals, either individually or in groups. We encourage you to take this opportunity to facilitate conversations about how our individual identities influence our community and how we teach and learn.
Proposals should include:
