When requesting permission to use copyrighted material in the classroom, for publication, or for any other academic purpose, it is very important that you clearly and completely communicate your request to the copyright owner. Any request for use should always include the following:
1. Title, author and/or editor, edition and date of the material to be duplicated or used
2. Exact material to be used (page numbers, chapters, images, screen shots, music, etc.)
3. Number of copies to be made
4. Use to be made of the material
5. Form of distribution (classroom, newsletter, book, website, etc.)
6. Whether or not the material will be sold
7. Type of reprint (photography, digital, photocopy, etc.)
Requests may be made directly to the publisher (or distributor) of the material or to the Copyright Clearance Center. Allow a minumum of three weeks for a reply.
The Penrose Library subscribes to a number of image databases which may be used according to our license agreements. While many organizations license the use of still images, there is no single source to seek permission for the use of an image. Please contact the publisher of the photograph, use a royalty-free organization which distributes free photographs (such as Creative Commons) or a stock photo agency.
