In our Lincoln Tutors Program, Whitman College students are assigned to
a classroom at Lincoln High School in a subject that
they feel comfortable explaining to students (English, math, science,
social studies, etc.). Many of the students at this school have trouble
at home and some of them are involved with drugs, alcohol, or other
destructive behaviors. Lincoln Tutors work with any of the students
in the classroom who are struggling with their course work, helping to
explain concepts, provide examples, and talk through the process of
figuring out the answer. The focus of this program is academic and it is
not as much about the personal one-on-one relationship, though building
positive relationships is crucial to successful tutoring. Lincoln Tutors are trained in basic tutoring
skills and also provided with information from the teachers about how to
best work with the struggling students. For more information, please contact Maia Hansen, Special Projects Intern at
