What is WTTM?

Whitman Teaches the Movement is a volunteer program started in response to Washington State's failing grade regarding their standards for Civil Rights education. During the project Whitman students are trained to teach a curriculum created by the Southern Poverty Law Center, regarding Civil Rights. Then they enter a 2nd, 5th, 7th or 11th grade classroom in Walla Walla to teach this lesson to the local public school students. This program allows Whitman students to be involved in the local community, get experience teaching and learn about a very important time in United States history.

Michelle Garcia Bio

Michelle Garcia will be conducting the training sessions this year. Here is a brief biography:

Michelle Marsh Garcia is an educator and trainer who specializes in developing and delivering anti-bias teacher trainings and materials. Most recently she led the professional development program at Teaching Tolerance at the Southern Poverty Law Center. Her prior work with the Anti-Defamation League and the City of Los Angeles Human Relations Commission also focused on programmatic interventions to reduce prejudice, enhance intergroup relations, and promote educational equity. She received her undergraduate degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley and her Master of Public Policy from UCLA.
