We are often asked by students about agencies beond Walla Walla. Since Whitman Community Service partners with non-profits in the Walla Walla area we decided to ask our current students and staff and our alums for their favorite organizations outside our community. The following organizations have been recommended by Whitman students and alums. The people who have suggested these agencies have volunteered, interned, or worked with them and think you should check them out, too.

Mission: Homeward Pet is a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter serving the Seattle area. Our mission is to give homeless animals a second chance through our rescue, shelter, and adoption programs.
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer opportunties with this organization all involve working closely with the animals in the adoption rooms and clinic. A typical shift includes feeding, petting, socializing, cleaning cages, and playing with the animals. Laundry is also done during every shift. One of the biggest parts of volunteering with the animals is socializing them because many of these animals were abused, abandoned, or strays before they came to the shelter.
Required Skills: Volunteers must be willing to work with animals and committed to spending quality time one-on-one with them. Cleaning and feeding alone is not enough to do during a shift.
