Mission: The Center for Community Service (CCS) serves students
interested in community service by acting as a volunteer clearinghouse
and liaison between the community and Whitman College. It is a central
coordinating office for on- and off-campus volunteer efforts. The CCS
promotes citizenship and public service as an integral part of
education and of life.
Description: The CCS provides opportunities to begin
volunteering through Volunteer Fairs, student-lead partnerships like
The Whitman Mentor Program, The Story Time Project, and group
activities such as Make a Difference Day, Service Saturdays, and
Alternative Spring Breaks. The CCS educates the Whitman community
regarding the importance of community service and creates opportunities
for students to have meaningful service learning experiences. The CCS
also works with the Community Service House, an interest house designed
for students interested in pursuing community service individually, and
to promote a service ethic on the campus as a whole.
History: The Center for Community Service was implemented on
campus during the 1994-1995 academic year. It has been supported
through generous alumni donations, the Privat family, as well as
through a gift from the class of 2001.
How to Volunteer: Anyone interested in volunteering may browse
the many opportunities on our website, pick up copies of our annual
Guide to Volunteer Opportunities at the
CCS office, attend Volunteer Fairs, drop by the CCS office, or schedule
a one-on-one volunteer consultation. We are always available and
excited to talk with you!
VOLUNTEER BECAUSE YOU CAN!
