Whitman College homepage transitions to new look July 12

Many campus community members have asked about when the Whitman Web site will reflect the new visual identity. The transition of the Whitman home page to the new look is being timed to align with the arrival of the new letterhead/stationery/business cards, etc. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the home page will begin to feature the new logo and convert to blue with yellow accents on July 12, and the paper orders will arrive that week.

Experience the Yellowstone region in photos and words

Thanks in large part to Bob Carson, Grace Farnsworth Phillips Professor of Geology and Environmental Studies, a group of students explored the Yellowstone region in ways typical “tourists” might never imagine. Inspired by Carson’s teaching and “intimate” knowledge of the area, student Zach Schierl ’12 wrote a first-person story about the trip and provided some spectacular photography. Read the story here.

Staff and Faculty Accomplishments

In March, chemistry department faculty and students traveled to San Francisco to present their work at the 239th American Chemistry Society (ACS) National Meeting. Attending chemistry faculty included Allison Calhoun, Frank Dunnivant, Mark Juhasz, Nathan Lien, Tim Machonkin and Deb Simon. Dunnivant, Machonkin and Simon each presented papers at the meeting, which typically draws more than 11,000 chemists, chemical engineers, academicians, graduate and undergraduate students and other related professionals. Representing the largest number of Whitman chemistry students ever to attend an ACS National Meeting, student presenters included Bailey Arend, Kevin Chung, Nate Conroy, Paul DaRosa, Anees Daud, Amy Doerner, Emily Doyle, Brandon Fennell, Matt Goldfogel, Nicole James, Hannah Main, Spenser Meeks, Madeline Polivka, Kristine Smith, and Tam Truong.

A series of photographs by Greg Lehman, communications officer and staff photographer, is currently on display in the Stevens Gallery at Reid Campus Center. Titled, “Walla Walla Wide,” the installation features panoramic images of Whitman campus and the surrounding Walla Walla Valley. The works, which are printed on canvas, almost giving them the look of oil paintings, will be displayed through August. Click here to learn more about Greg and his current showing.

“How I spent my summer vacation” – share your story!

Again this summer The Fountain offers staff and faculty the opportunity to share summer vacation and travel stories. Is this summer your turn for an exciting adventure? Or maybe a fascinating learning opportunity, whether to an exotic locale or to a scholarly or professional conference? Maybe you’ll participate in a service-oriented trip, lead a tour or just spend a relaxing vacation on a beach somewhere. And on your travels, maybe you’ll run into fellow Whitman folks or meet someone who knows about the college. Feel free to share your “summer vacation” stories; photos are encouraged!
