NAHRO PROFESSIONAL INTERN ASSISTANCE INITIATIVE
The NAHRO Professional Intern Assistance Initiative is a two year internship paying a reasonable entry level salary with the possibility of having benefits. This internship is located in about 10 to 20 possible sites around the country, specifically and including the Walla Walla Housing Authority in Walla Walla, Washington. This Professional Intern Initiative will allow participants the opportunity to help to manage and delivery affordable housing thereby performing a vital community service at the same time receive professional training and certification.
There are four core components to the program that will give participants the necessary skills and exposure to seasoned professionals and other professionals to "jump start" a successful career. The four components are: 1) meaningful job experience, 2) training (professional courses toward certification and key ‘vision' courses); 3) networking through special intern conference calls; and 4) rotation to other housing agencies and HUD.
There are two types of training associated with the Professional Intern Assistance Initiative. The first is professional training on a specific program track (i.e., vouchers or public housing, occupancy or inspections) that can lead toward a NAHRO certification. The second is vision and strategic training for professional development. This training will provide knowledge on leadership, creating strategic planning for a housing organization, metrics, and customer service.
The Public Housing Agency is required to identify a mentor and supervisor for the young professional. Mentorship will also occur by having access to senior NAHRO Fellows in the program quarterly or semi-annually.
Networking will occur with monthly conference calls with interns and their mentors or supervisors. Networking opportunities will also occur at NAHRO conferences at the National, Regional and State levels, including special events at these conferences.
While the Intern will be associated with one Public Housing Agency and have rotations within that agency, the Intern will also will typically experience rotations with different Public Housing Agencies within the area There is also a possibility to have a rotation with local HUD field offices or National HUD office.
