Whitman College graduates pursue graduate degrees in a wide variety of fields and disciplines. As a current student you can do a number of things to improve your candidacy and to select the programs that best meet your needs and desires. The Student Engagement Center offers the following:
The Annual Whitman College Graduate School Fair will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 from Noon to 3:00pm in the Reid Campus Center Ballroom. Graduate School Representatives also come to Whitman to recruit, so watch the student list serve for email announcements about these opportunities. The Student Engagement Center also provides links to internet sites of interest to students seeking information on graduate schools (see below), and our in-house Library houses books and directories on graduate schools. Please stop by and check out our books and resources!
As always, advising is available on your graduate school options at the Student Engagement Center. Call us at ext. 5183 or come by Reid Campus Center, Room 219, to make an appointment.

Whitman College prepares students for medical schools by giving them the ability to analyze and evaluate new medical research. Students at Whitman also develop effective communication skills and an ability to adapt their knowledge to new scenarios. If you are interested in showing medical schools that you have these abilities along with a strong education in the sciences, then Whitman College is the right place for you!
The Health Professions Advisory Committee can provide assistance to students who are planning to attend medical school. These students are encouraged to maintain contact with the chair of this committee throughout their time at Whitman. Students are also encouraged to keep in mind the admission requirements of the medical schools to which they plan to apply when deciding their schedules at Whitman.

The Student Engagement Center has a number of books available in its library that provide information about medical schools and careers in medicine. Also, students can contact alumni, parents of Whitman students, and friends of the college who can offer information regarding the practice of medicine through the Career Consultant Network at the Student Engagement Center. Application materials for the MCAT and the AMCAS-E are available in our Center or from Professor Jim Russo.

As with most quality liberal arts colleges, Whitman has no Pre-Law major. Lawyers need to possess excellent writing, reading, critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as a basic understanding of the human experience. Common undergraduate majors for future Whitman lawyers include economics, English, history, philosophy, and sociology, but law schools look with equal favor on students who have excelled in other rigorous liberal arts majors.
The Pre-Law Advisory Committee at Whitman can offer direction and advice to students about their plans for law school. Professor Patrick Frierson is the chair of this committee. Whitman also offers a combined program with Columbia University that allows students to complete a bachelor’s degree and law degree after six years instead of the usual seven.

Also available in our Center is the LSAT/LSDAS Registration and Information Book which contains all the information needed to register for and take the LSAT. Whitman College will host our annual Law School Panel on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 in Reid Campus Center G2 from 11:00-12:00 Noon. Law school representatives will discuss the application process, finanical aid, and the LSAT. You will have opportunities to ask questions at this event.

The best opportunities for advancement in modern business come to those who have acquired a knowledge of the underlying principles of economics, finance, and communication with society. A background in the sciences to prepare for the changing world may be beneficial. An understanding of the relation of business to government and the position of business in society also is essential. Technical training in the field of business administration is best achieved in graduate school or through on the job training.
