The Philadelphia Center The Philadelphia Center is an off-campus program (affiliated with Whitman) that provides opportunities for professional and intellectual development through experience-based and academic learning in an urban context.
The Washington Semester Program This program, sponsored by The American University of Washington D.C., offers students the opportunity to participate in one of eight programs: American Politics, Public Law, Foreign Policy, Economic Policy, Justice, The Arts, Peace and Conflict Resolution, and International Environment and Development. Each program consists of seminars, an internship, and a research project.
The Chicago Urban Studies Program This program provides students with a unique experience that combines education on urban problems with the chance to participate in internships that address specific urban issues of the Chicago area. Students also complete an independent study project relating to their experience. The Associated Colleges of the Midwest sponsors this program.
Environmental Studies: Whitman College Semester in the West
This is a field study program funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation. Students will spend an entire semester traveling in the American West and focusing on ecological, social, and political issues. They meet with a variety of people such as activists, writers, and environmentalists who confront the issues that students are studying. Topics studied include management of national parks and monuments, environmental justice, and grizzly bear and wolf reintroduction plans.
Whitman College will host two fairs in 2008-2009. In the fall, the Career Center will hold its annual Graduate School Fair followed by our annual Career and Internship Fair in the spring. Additionally, Whitman students are encouraged to attend other colleges and university career fairs. These events are great opportunities to facilitate your job search and contact a large number of employers very quickly. You can also download a copy of a useful guide, Making the Most of a Career Fair, to gain a few useful tips.
The Career Consultants are alumni, parents, and friends of the college, in many occupational fields who have agreed to make themselves available to talk to current students and alumni about their jobs and careers. Some of them have agreed to sponsor internship/summer job opportunities. Others may have hints on where to start. Stop by the Career Center to find out how to connect with them. The Career Consultant Network is available by appointment in the Career Center. This a great resource that can help connect you to very helpful alumni -- don’t forget to utilize this database when seeking internships!!
Summer job and internship directories (e.g. The National Directory of Internships, America’s Top 100 Internships, The Internship Bible, Internship Opportunities at the Smithsonian Institution) are available in the Career Center Library. They are a great resource and can give you an idea of what companies and organizations you might be able to contact in your home town or other parts of the country.
Many faculty members offer research opportunities for students, and different departments may have quality internships/jobs over the summer. Start talking to your professors and other faculty/staff members! Additionally, on-campus job openings for students can be accessed here.
The Washington State Work-Study Program
The Washington State Work-Study Program, funded by the State of Washington, is designed to help students develop summer internships and thereby earn money for college while exploring a potential career field. The Washington State Work-Study Program accomplishes this by making it easier for potential employers to "afford" hiring a summer intern by reimbursing them for 65% of a student’s wages.
Time Line for Applications
April 8, 2009 - Applications due in Career Center by 5:00 PM (for first consideration). If funds are still available, applications will be accepted after the April 8, 2009 deadline. Applications submitted by the first deadline will receive first consideration.
April 24, 2009 - Applicants notified of selection decisions
Students must be eligible to receive need based financial aid. All eligible students should receive a letter from the Career Center notifying them of their eligibility by Thanksgiving (seniors are not eligible unless they are returning for the fall and/or spring semesters). As soon as possible after receiving the letter, students should pick up the application and other materials from the Career Center or download the application from the Career Center website on the Students page.
It is the student’s responsibility to begin contacting potential employers and inquiring about the possibility of developing an internship. The Career Center staff can assist you in utilizing a number of resources including the Career Consultant Network, NIC, Internships.com, etc. (see above information) that has proven to be very helpful to students.
Any business or organization is eligible with the exception of those that are directly affiliated with a religious or political organization (internships may potentially be developed with such organizations if certain criteria are met -- check with the Career Center for more information). The proposed internship must be professional in nature and relevant to the career interests of the student. The rate of pay must be comparable to that of other employees who are engaged in similar work.
