2013 Summer Research Internship: Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI)
The Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI) in Seattle, WA, in partnership with Whitman College, will support two students to conduct research in global health and gain experience working in a non-profit biotechnology organization. IDRI is a Seattle-based, not-for-profit organization committed to applying innovative science to the research and development of products to prevent, detect and treat infectious diseases of poverty. Students may gain research experience in biomedical research at the molecular & cellular level in projects working on vaccine formulations and tuberculosis and malaria vaccine development. The stipend for the program is $4,500 and interns are expected to work for 10 weeks. There are 2 positions available for 2013.

The IDRI Internship Steering Committee at Whitman College is soliciting applications from students who will be entering their final year at Whitman College in fall of 2013 (Dec 2013 or May 2014 grads).

A complete application includes:
A. From the APPLICANT, the electronic submission (preferably as a single pdf file)
1) The application form (student name, email address, phone number, major, expected date of graduation, and evaluator information)
2) A 1-2 page statement of research interests and career goals.
3) A transcript/list of courses/grades. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable, but must include courses from Fall 2012. Also list courses enrolled in for Spring 2013.
B. From the EVALUATORS
Two letters of support from Whitman faculty members who have served as course instructors, advisors, or research mentors in the sciences. A letter from a previous summer research mentor at another institution can replace one Whitman letter. One Whitman faculty evaluator must agree to serve as the student’s on-campus mentor after the summer project.
All application materials must be submitted to Jim Russo, HHMI Program Director, by 4:00 pm on Monday, January 14, 2013. A selection committee of science faculty will evaluate the applications and two students will be selected and notified. The applications for selected students will be forwarded to IDRI for approval and lab placement. An on-site interview may be scheduled in Seattle.
