The Baker Ferguson Fitness Center and Paul Harvey Pool, which are
open to Whitman students, athletes, faculty, staff and alumni, is a
38,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that opened in the fall
of 2006 at a cost of $10 million.
Located north of Cordiner Hall at the corner of Park and Main streets,
the facility features two key components. One is a 10,000-square-foot
fitness center with an elaborate array of the latest in weight-training
and cardiovascular equipment. The other is a sparkling 30-meter
swimming pool with eight competitive lanes and three practice lanes.
The Harvey Pool, which is home to the Whitman varsity swim teams,
played host to the 2007 Northwest Conference swimming championships and
includes an elevated area for spectators. The pool is also used for
club water polo and kayaking practice, and to meet the recreational
swimming needs of the Whitman community.
As Baker Faculty Fitness Center takes center stage, plans are in the
works for renovation of the nearby Sherwood Athletic Center, which
first opened in 1969. For now, Sherwood facilities remain open for
dance and exercise classes, racquetball and squash. The Sherwood
gymnasiums (large and small), locker rooms and outdoor climbing wall
also remain in use. Fresh towels are available at the Sherwood service
desk, which is staffed on a rotating schedule. A courtesy phone is also
located at the service desk; call the BFFC service desk (526-4729) if
you need immediate assistance. The Sherwood weight-training and
cardiovascular rooms are limited to members of the varsity athletic
teams, who must be accompanied by a coach or trainer to use those
facilities.
