There are two types of programming hiring that ASWC oversee: Event Director hiring and Programming Office Director hiring. Event Directors are responsible for overseeing one of ASWC's three annual events: Winterim, Choral Contest, and Renaissance Faire. The directors of each of these events are responsible for overseeing these events and ensuring their implementation. All three of these Directors are hired in May to serve for the following academic year.
Programming Office Directors are hired for the following offices: Public Events, Public Speakers, and ASWC Films. All of these positions are hired in the Spring Semester to serve for the following academic year.
The Public Speakers Chair is charged in the ASWC bylaws with providing Whitman groups and organizations with a service for locating, contracting, and organizing speaker engagements. The duties of the Chair include: identifying potential speakers to bring to Whitmans campus, negotiating contracts, arranging for room and board, scheduling the venue, and advertising the event. The Chair must be flexible and organized, willing to coordinate with other programming groups on campus, campus-sponsored clubs, and academic departments. The Chair must also be willing to devote significant time to the position, particularly on the days of events when he or she will be the primary point of contact between the speaker and the Whitman community. The 2004-05 salary for the position of Public Speakers Chair was $1500/year. The position is a year-long position.
The Public Events Chair is charged in the ASWC bylaws with providing Whitman students with cultural, social, and musical events. The specific duties of the Public Events Chair include: communicating with other programming entities on campus and agents or tour managers for performers, evaluate and follow-up on requests from student groups regarding specific performers, and manage advertising, scheduling, hospitality, security, and ticketing for events that come to campus. In addition to strong communication skills, the Public Events Chair must have personal initiative, be willing to devote significant time to the position, be highly organized, flexible, and persistent in seeking to schedule new events. The 2004-05 salary for the position of Public Events Chair was $1500/year. The position is a year-long position.
The ASWC Films Chair is charged in the ASWC bylaws with providing Whitman students with cinematic entertainment. He or she is responsible for negotiating the rental of selected films, arranging time and venues for showing, advertising for the event, and reporting back to the Programming Committee. The Chair should be an active participant in the Programming Committee, attending weekly meetings and assisting the Committee to the best of his/her capacity. The 2004-05 salary for the Films Chair position was $900/year. The position is a year-long position.
