The Student Life Committee may review and recommend policies on any matter, which is not of a curricular or disciplinary nature, relating to student life at Whitman College. There are six students on this committee, who serve for 2-year terms. There must be a balance of male and female students and Greek and Independent students.
The Council on Student Affairs holds regular meetings for the purpose of hearing cases involving infraction of College regulations. The Council also serves as a fact-finding body in matters relating to student welfare. There are five student seats on this committee, and student representatives must be gender balanced. Each year, one sophomore student is appointed to sit for a three-year term and two seniors each sit for a one-year term.
The Student Budget Committee was created to advise the College administration on the College budget and proposed tuition increases. The Student Budget Committee meets to advise the President's Council during the formation of the College budget as well as to discuss goals and objectives of the College. This Committee is responsible for submitting a written statement regarding any proposed tuition increases and also for holding student forums on the budget activities of the College. Three student representatives who are not elected or salaried employees of ASWC serve one-year terms on this Committee.
The General Studies Committee is responsible for make recommendations about the introduction of new courses, substantive changes in existing courses, and alteration of rules for the Core program. There are two student representatives on this committee, who each serve one-year terms.
The Library Advisory Committee advises the library director on any substantive changes to library policy. Two students serve on this committee for their entire duration at Whitman. Students who have experience working in the library as student employees are encouraged to apply.
The purpose of the College Athletic Committee is to offer advice and make recommendations to the Director of Athletics, to the administration, and to the faculty on matters relating to the conduct and character of the College's program in intercollegiate athletics. Three student representatives serve on this committee for the duration of their time at Whitman. Student representatives should have a demonstrated interest in varsity athletics or in athletic issues.
The Student Technology Advisory Committee (STAC) advises Whitman College Technology Services on academic and student computing. The committee is also a forum for any changes to WTCS policy that impacts students. Six student members serve on this committee for the duration of their time at Whitman.
The Bookstore Advisory Committee provides input to the Bookstore Director on the products and services offered by the Bookstore and advises on any change in policy and procedure. ASWC appoints two students to sit on the committee.
There are three student/faculty College Committees that have student seats and six student Advisory Committees. ASWC is responsible for appointing representatives to these committees. The appointment process to all these committees is carried out by the ASWC Nominations Chair in accordance with Article IX of the by-laws. The general procedure works as follows:
After confirmation, the student representatives to the various committees attend all meetings of the committee to which they were appointed, and may be requested to make periodic reports to the Senate on the business of that Committee.
