Visit Scholarship Program

Whitman College seeks to bring students whose backgrounds and experiences offer varying perspectives on living and learning in a multicultural world to our campus. In order to accomplish this, we offer two programs to help encourage students to visit, apply, and enroll at Whitman College:

Who is invited?

Approximately 100 high school seniors from underrepresented socioeconomic, racial and cultural backgrounds are invited to an expense-paid visit to Whitman during the fall or spring semesters. Whitman covers the cost of transportation, food, accommodations, and activities on campus.  In the fall, prospective students apply for this opportunity and about half are invited to campus.  In the spring, admitted students are selected for the visit. Students visit on the program once.

What will students do?

Visiting students will stay with an overnight host in a residence hall, eat in our dining halls, visit up to two classes, meet with coaches, faculty, staff and student leaders (if they desire), and interview with an Admission Officer. Many students visit on one of our larger Visitors' Days so the opportunity to attend information sessions about study abroad, athletics, and particular academic and extra-curricular programs is also available.

When is this program?

Two visits will be scheduled for the Fall 2009 semester. October 8-9 and November 12-13. Students will likely travel to Walla Walla on a Thursday afternoon and depart on Friday evening. However, we will try to make the visit convenient with the student's personal calendar and keep in consideration the travel distance.  Students hoping to visit for the October date should complete the application by Friday, September 11.  Students hoping to visit for the November date should complete the application by Friday, October 9. Application pieces can be sent online, via fax, or through regular mail.

Why should I apply?

The Visit Scholarship Program and Lomen-Douglas Scholarships have been created in an effort to increase socioeconomic and multicultural diversity at Whitman College. The Visit Scholarship Program also allows students who might not otherwise have the means to visit Whitman an opportunity to experience our campus community.

Who should I contact?

Please contact the Visit Scholarship Program Coordinator, Alana Kaholokula, if you would like to be considered for one of these travel scholarships. You may also complete the online application after August 1, 2009.  Alana can be reached toll-free at 877-462-9448 or kaholoas@whitman.edu

Note: International students and students living outside the United States do not qualify for this program.

Please call toll-free, 877-462-9448, or email kaholoas@whitman.edu if we can answer any questions.
