To complete an application for admission, Whitman requires either ACT scores, including the writing test, or SAT scores. These scores must be reported to us via an official score report from the testing agency or be listed on the official transcript from your high school. It is your responsibility to see that the scores are reported to us in a proper manner. Whitman’s CEEB code number is 4951; our ACT code number is 4492. Students whose native language is not English must also submit scores from the TOEFL and, if possible, the TWE exams.

All different kinds of students transfer to Whitman. Many come from other four-year liberal arts colleges similar to Whitman. Others come from larger comprehensive universities and are often seeking smaller classes, greater contact with faculty, and a greater sense of community. A number come from community colleges, locally and nationwide. What transfer students find at Whitman is a community that welcomes them - their perspective and often unique contributions to the classroom and campus life. While most of our students fit the definition of "traditional college student" our student body includes students from the ages of 16 to 60, single parents, student’s seeking a second bachelor’s degree, working professionals, and students who were not able to enter or complete college immediately after high school. Whitman offers a host of services to meet the needs of all students - what ever your age, background, or educational goals. On-campus housing is available to all transfer students, and students transferring with freshman or sophomore status are required to live in college housing unless they are married or 21 years of age or older.
Transfer applicants complete the Common Application for Transfer Admission. The transfer application can be downloaded as a .pdf file or you can apply on-line, or you can obtain a copy by contacting the Office of Admission.
Checklist for Transfer Applicants
High school transcripts are required of all applicants. If you attended more than one high school, a transcript from the school from which you graduated is sufficient as long as all high school work is reflected on that transcript. Original copies of transcripts from all colleges and universities attended are required. An original transcript must be submitted from each individual institution. You should contact the high school you attended or graduated from and all the colleges or universities you attended and ask that a transcript be sent directly to the Whitman College Office of Admission 515 Boyer Avenue, Walla Walla, WA 99362-2046. This is the preferred method, but you can have the transcripts sent to you in sealed envelopes, which you can send to us with your Application for Admission. In an emergency, transcripts can be faxed to the Office of Admission, 509-527-4967, but original copies must also be sent.
This form can be confusing to transfer students because it is intended for freshman applicants. If you graduated from high school within the last two years contact the Guidance Department at your high school and have this form completed and sent along with your high school transcript. If you graduated from high school more than two years ago this form is optional. Additionally the mid-year report is not required of transfer applicants. Download the School Report form here.
One letter of recommendation from a recent teacher or professor is required. You may send up to two additional letters if you like. If you graduated from high school in the last two years you can send letters from high school teachers, but we would prefer to have a letter from a college professor as well. If you have not attended college recently, please call the Transfer Coordinator, Katie DePonty, in the Office of Admission for suggestions on other sources of recommendation letters.
Transfer students who will have completed two full years of college work upon enrollment at Whitman need not submit SAT I or ACT scores. If you will not have completed two full years of college work upon enrollment at Whitman you must submit official SAT I or ACT scores. These scores must be reported to us via an official score report from the testing agency or be listed on the official transcript from your high school. Transfer applicants can apply for Whitman need-based scholarships, Whitman Achievement Scholarships, and U.S. government grants and loans. Washington State residents may also be eligible for state funded programs. Contact the Office of Financial Aid Services for more information concerning all types of aid to Whitman students.
Work satisfactorily completed at an accredited collegiate institution is accepted for transfer provided it is academic in nature and is generally applicable toward a liberal arts program of study. In general, professional or vocationally oriented courses are not accepted for transfer. Eligible course must be at the college level, at most institutions this means courses numbered 100 and above. No transfer credit is granted toward a Whitman degree unless it is of average (C- or 1.7 on a numerical scale) or better quality. A total of 70 credits of advanced standing is the maximum allowed toward a bachelor’s degree from Whitman. This includes all credit transferred from another accredited collegiate institution, any credit granted for Advanced Placement Exam scores, International Baccalaureate Exam Scores, and including any credit allowed for military service. If you need a preliminary evaluation of your transcript you should contact the Registrar in writing and include a copy of your most recent transcript and a list of any courses currently in progress. Class standing at Whitman College is as follows:

The number of credits you choose to transfer affects the number of years you will be eligible for need-based financial aid. For example, should you choose to transfer 27 credits you will be granted sophomore standing and will be eligible for three years of need-based financial aid.
Preliminary Credit Evaluation
If you need a preliminary evaluation of your transcript you should contact the Registrar in writing and include a copy of your most recent transcript and a list of any courses currently in progress. A maximum of 62 semester hours of credit may be transferred from an accredited two-year college. These credits are applied toward the first two years of the bachelor’s degree. Whitman evaluates two-year college transcripts on a course-by-course basis and allows credit for academic coursework in Associate of Arts degree programs.
Residence at Whitman is required of all degree candidates during the two semesters immediately prior to completion of their degree requirements. A minimum of 54 credits must be earned in residence in the on-campus programs of the colleges, and at least 44 credits must be earned in regularly graded courses at Whitman, apart from transfer, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, challenge, Pass/D/Fail, and credit/no-credit work.

Whitman College encourages high school students to participate in the Advanced Placement Program conducted by the College Board and each year awards credit to qualified entering students for successful participation in this program. Applicants taking one or more AP exams are responsible for having their scores sent directly to Whitman from the College Board. Credit will be granted for scores of 4 or 5 on most of the College Board Advanced Placement Tests, except in some departments where a score of 5 is required. Whitman recognizes the International Baccalaureate Program. Credit may be granted for scores of 5, 6, or 7 on selected higher level IB examinations. The eligible examinations are the same as those for the AP exams. A maximum of one year’s credit (30 semester hours) may be earned.
Whitman will review credit earned through the Running Start Program and similar dual enrollment programs on a course-by-course basis. Course work is eligible for credit only if the class(es) are taught on the college campus by college faculty and no more than one-third of the participant in the class are high school students. Only courses in which an average grade (C- or 1.7 on a numerical scale) or better quality are eligible. Credits awarded will be for classes at a commensurate level and in subject matter relevant to the Whitman College liberal and sciences curriculum.
Whitman does not award credit for coursework completed in a high school classroom and appearing on a transcript from a college or university.
Whitman awards credit for courses taken as part of military services in accordance with the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Forces as the courses relate to a liberal arts degree program.
No credit is granted for the CLEP or informal prior learning experiences.
