Why did you choose Whitman?

During my college search I was mostly looking at bigger public universities. Whitman was the last school I visited and that visit entirely changed my perspective on what I wanted out of my college experience. I immediately felt comfortable on campus and I appreciated the chance to attend classes and hear personal stories from students. I felt such a positive energy on campus and the community of smart, compassionate, open-minded, and inspiring people made me feel right at home.

What is your best Whitman memory?

The night before graduation my freshmen year, two friends and I completed the “Clarette’s Challenge” by staying up all night to go to the local diner when it opens at 6 am. We were on a mission to finish it in honor of our last night as freshmen. We stayed up until around 3 and then were overcome by sleepiness. To stay awake, we ran around Ankeny and drew with chalk outside Jewett. Around 5 we drove out in the wheat fields and watched the sunrise. We finally made it to Clarette’s at 6, but I barely remember what I ate I was so tired. I’m hoping to come full circle by doing it before my own graduation this year.

What has Whitman taught you outside of the classroom?

The importance of balance in my life. I think like many of my peers at Whitman, I came to college a driven and academically dedicated student. And while I’ve stayed dedicated to my studies, I’ve also come to value the experiences that don’t come from academic work. Learning to interact and work with others in a variety of capacities has been invaluable. I’ve enjoyed trying new sports, activities, and experiences. In addition to academic development, college is about discovering yourself and your passions in all areas of life.
