Activities, Clubs, and Jobs on Campus: Outdoor Program Trip Leader and Rental Shop Employee, Scramble Leader, Intramural Sports, Sustainability Advisory Committee, Whitman Direct Action
Your typical day at Whitman:
Mornings at Whitman are for class and napping. After lunch, at least once a week I head out for an excursion with one of my classes. It could be anything—touring a Columbia River dam or analyzing a rock outcrop in the Blue Mountains. In the evening, I head to the Outdoor Program Rental Shop to work sorting gear and helping students and community members plan trips. Dinner is a good time to socialize—my friends and I frequent our favorite restaurants before finding a table in the library where it is quiet enough to concentrate but loud enough that we don’t bother anyone with our side conversations.
What has Whitman taught you outside of the classroom?
Whitman has taught innumerable lessons, everything from how to roll a kayak to how to cut back on my commitments to really devote myself to the things I most love. But, most importantly, Whitman has taught me how to rely on my peers. In Whitman’s uncompetitive atmosphere it is not only incredibly easy to learn alongside your classmates, it often forms the basis of class structure. My peers have complicated and enriched my thinking on politics, economics, food, travel, and even games. At Whitman, education is as lively outside the classroom as in it.
What is your favorite place on campus?
I love sitting and reading along College Creek. There are shady benches tucked away in the prettiest little parts of the campus’ masterful landscaping. During the winter, you can watch the steam rise from the surface of the water, and there are ducks to ogle year-round. It is a great place to find peace in the middle of the bustling campus during a busy week.
Favorite restaurant in Walla Walla?
Bangkok 103 has some of the most delicious and authentic Thai food I have ever had. A Thai woman prepares each dish individually while her American husband runs the front of the house. It’s a no-frills place, with awesome curry.
