OPENING WEEK ACTIVITIES FOR FACULTY
2009-2010 Academic Year

We welcome you to Whitman for the 2009-2010 academic year and extend a warm invitation for you to attend the special programs that have been arranged for Opening Week. These events are designed to offer new students an appropriate introduction to the College community, and faculty participation will contribute greatly to their success. We draw your attention to a few items of specific interest to faculty.

New Faculty Orientation: Please see New Faculty Orientation Schedule

I.D. CARDS: New faculty members must have Whitman picture I.D. cards. The Opening Week Schedule, which is available on the Whitman homepage, lists times available for faculty who do not currently have I.D. cards to have their pictures taken. You can also call Security at #5777 to schedule an appointment.

Faculty instructions for the 2009 Convocation ceremony

10:00-11:30 a.m., Friday, August 28 ~ Cordiner Hall

Faculty participation in Convocation and Commencement is required. As is customary at Commencement, there will be a procession with the faculty in academic regalia. Please meet at the north side of Cordiner Hall at 9:40 a.m., Friday, August 28 to assemble for the procession. All part-time and full-time temporary faculty are also invited and encouraged to march at Convocation. All faculty should complete the check-off sheet located in their building noting whether or not they will participate in the procession by 12:00 noon, Tuesday, August 25. (Faculty located in Boyer House and Memorial Building will be contacted by the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty for their R.S.V.P.). Caps and gowns may be obtained in the basement of Cordiner Hall (Please take the northwest entrance closest to Clarette’s and proceed downstairs) on Friday, August 28 from 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Faculty members may keep their caps and gowns until the Commencement ceremonies in May. If you have questions, please call the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty (5397). As determined at the March 18, 2007 faculty meeting, the marching order for faculty will be determined by the number of semesters of service at Whitman.

Friday, August 28

9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Caps and gowns are available in the basement of Cordiner Hall. Faculty need to line up at Cordiner Hall at 9:40 a.m. (see instructions on preceding page)

10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. CONVOCATION

Convocation talk by Elizabeth Vandiver, Clement Biddle Penrose Associate Professor of Latin and Classics ( Location: Cordiner Hall)

11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. New Students and Family Lunch. New students and their family members are invited to a picnic lunch. There will be a charge for everyone except new students. (Location: Memorial Building Lawn – Reid Campus Center in case of rain)

1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Special academic information sessions for students interested in majoring in biology, chemistry, environmental studies, foreign languages, health professions, music, and 3-2 engineering/3-2 computer science. (Location: Times and locations for these sessions are in student packets).

2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Academic Advising Group Meetings for First-Year and Transfer Students (Location: Adviser's Office)

2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Individual Academic Advising Meetings For First-Year and Transfer Students (Location: Adviser's Office)

3:45 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Reception for Parents. Faculty are invited to attend this reception. (Location: Baker Faculty Center – Reid Campus Center in case of rain)

Saturday, August 29

8:00 a.m. – 11:00 Noon Online registration changes for new students who need to make changes to their fall semester class schedule, from any networked computer on campus, including Maxey and Olin Computer Labs. Students must have adviser Web clearance and have completed Web Check-In before schedule changes can be completed.

2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. First-year panel discussion of “The Last Town on Earth”. Faculty panelists are: Nadine Knight, Jason Pribilsky and Jim Russo. (Location: Cordiner Hall)

Monday, Aug. 31

9:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Academic Advising Appointments for Returning Students. Returning students who plan to add or drop classes should arrange to meet with their faculty advisors during this time. (Location: Adviser's Office)

Encounters Faculty Writing Workshop: for those teaching in Encounters, there is a writing workshop from 9:00 AM-noon M, T, W, August 24, 25, 26. Location TBD.

Procedures for Registration

Fall Semester 2009

Faculty Advisors will have individually scheduled appointments with their new advisees between 2:30-5:30 PM on Friday, August 28 following the group meeting at 2:00 p.m. Continuing students will confirm their attendance at Whitman using Web Check-in beginning August 24.

  • FIRST YEAR & NEW TRANSFERS will meet as a group with their advisors from 2:00-2:30 p.m., on Friday, August 28, and then individually by appointment from 2:30-5:30 PM to discuss their schedules. Advisors will give Web approval to students at this time, thus allowing students to complete Web check-in. New students will finalize their registrations on Saturday, August 29 from 9:00 AM to Noon via the Web. Detailed information on these procedures will be sent separately by the Registrar’s Office.
     
  • Starting on Monday, August 24, WEB CHECK-IN will be used by all returning students to confirm their attendance at Whitman for the Fall Semester. Advisor consent is not required for returning students with no changes to their schedules, but is required for those who plan to add or drop classes (see below).
     
  • ADD/DROP changes may be made to returning students’ schedules after Web Check-in on Monday, August 31, beginning at 8:00 AM for seniors, 1:00 PM for juniors, and 7:00 PM for sophomores, and then will be available for all students until the close of the registration period on September 14. Web add/drop requires advisor’s electronic clearance. Finally, all Faculty members are encouraged to be available in their offices during regular business hours on Monday, August 31, to respond to questions from faculty advisors and returning students, and to provide possible course consent to returning students who might wish to register for closed classes.

Instructions for new students will be delivered to their Campus mailboxes prior to their return. However, returning students will receive instructions only by email so they can complete Web Check-in from any Web-enabled location (starting Monday, August 24).
