Action for Animals

Description: Action for Animals is a group of students at Whitman College concerned with different aspects of animal rights. We're all involved for different ethical, environmental, and philosophical reasons. It's our goal to promote individual responsibility by sharing information about animal welfare and involving the campus through various outreach events and activities.

 

Campus Climate Challenge

Meeting Time: Every Friday at 12:00 in Reid G02 (basement of Reid)

Description: Campus Climate Challenge focuses on collaborating with the college's administration in large-scale projects  (such as the solar panels) to move Whitman towards a policy of carbon neutrality as well as engaging in smaller-scale conservation efforts and education campaigns to reduce carbon emissions.

 

Campus Greens

Meeting Time: Every other Tuesday at 8 pm in the Outhouse

Description: Campus Greens is a progressive club devoted to environmental preservation, education and awareness. Campus Greens is is a gathering place for green-minded student leaders and all those who wish to see the environment become a top priority both at Whitman and nationwide.

 

Organic Garden

Meeting Time: Open gardens are held during the spring at the following times: TBA

Description: Whitman's organic garden is a space dedicated to spiritual renewal, meaningful labor, community vitality, and sharing healthy practices of cultivating the land. Enjoy a nighttime walk to the garden, sit under the gazebo, pick some basil.

 

Student Agriculture at Whitman

Meeting Time: Every other Sunday at 1 pm, Glover Alston Center

Description: It is the mission of Student Agriculture at Whitman to provide locally grown produce and to promote an understanding of the importance of local, sustainably grown foods to the Whitman College community.  We grow salad greens in the science building greenhouse which are offered in the dining halls and used in Bon Appetite's recipes.

 

Sustainability Advisory Committee

Chair: Sean Gehrke

Meeting Time:  4-5 times each semester on Thursdays at noon in Memorial 328

Description: The Sustainability Advisory Committee membership includes students, staff and faculty.  It serves as an umbrella group for all campus sustainability clubs and organizations.  The committee evaluates and serves an advisory role for campus practices and policies.  It provides a opportunity for all other groups to meet and share information and resources.  

 

Youth Adventure Program

Meeting Time: Based on program and training opportunities, schedule available on the website

Description: Youth Adventure Program provides low-income and at-risk youth with local outdoor and environmental education opportunities while simultaneously giving Whitman students training and leadership experiences.  Our volunteer leaders receive baseline training on group dynamic and safety skills, and training paths are available, especially for non-traditional leaders, to learn how to teach more technical activities, such as rock climbing and kayaking
