In prepara- tion for vet school, Kaitie talks to the public about the animals and exhibits and works in animal care consist- ing of observing animal behavior, cleaning and maintaining exhibits, preparing diets, providing enrichment and working directly with the keepers to provide for the animals as they see fit. BEST ASPECT OF YOUR INTERNSHIP “The best aspect of my internship is that every day is different. I’m constantly learning new things, meet- ing new people and gaining new responsibilities. At the same time, I am settling into a routine with exhibits I’ve spent a lot of time in, and my relationships with staff are always strengthening. Spending time with the animals makes this job so exciting: learning their names and their unique personalities, having them start to recognize me and interacting with them. Although shoveling poop and sweeping barns doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, it’s sandwiched in between unique and amazing opportunities. I’ve given emus a bath with the hose, held a yellow-collared macaw and tree boughs to reindeer, mule deer, alpaca and wallabies. This experience has been one I’ll never forget, and I hope to continue volunteering here in the future.”
