The Department of Chemistry has recently been awarded an NSF-MRI grant for the acquisition of a 400 MHz NMR spectrometer. Whitman College recently received an $800,000 Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant to enhance the Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology programs. This money, along with considerable support from the college, has generated some dramatic changes and new programs. These changes include-student research spaces for the chemistry program, the development of a new program to further support student-faculty research, the development of a summer-institute program for middle school science teachers slated to begin in the summer of 2009, offers curriculum development funds for the development of new courses associated with the biomolecular sciences and provides seed money for a newly created position in the Department of Chemistry in Bioanalytical Chemistry.
