Department of Chemistry
Student Learning Goals

Habits of Mind

• The student will be able to apply critical thinking and scientific logic to classify and interpret data.
• The student will be able to use creative approaches to devise novel solutions to complex chemical problems.
• The student will be able to work effectively both as an individual learner and as a member of a group.
• The student will be able to apply theoretical understandings to real-world problems.

Physical skills

• The student will be able to use appropriate mathematical, computational and analytical techniques to solve chemical problems.
• The student will be able to communicate scientific findings and information in graphical, written and oral format.
• The student will be able to visualize three-dimensional molecular structure and thus derive an understanding of function in chemical systems.
• The student will be able to navigate the current scientific literature to develop foundational knowledge in areas of interest.
• The student will be able to safely manipulate the standard tools and equipment in a chemistry laboratory.
• The student will be able to work in a safe and appropriate manner.

Content

• The student will meet nationally set standards associated with the content in the four major areas of chemistry: Analytical, Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry.
