Leroy G. Wade, Jr., was born in Florida but moved many times as a member of a military family. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry at Rice University in 1969 followed by an A.M.(1970) and Ph.D.(1974) in Organic Chemistry at Harvard University. Professor Wade was a teaching fellow at Harvard, a resident science tutor and freshman advisor at Radcliffe College and taught Organic Chemistry at Colorado State University for fifteen years before joining the faculty at Whitman College in 1989. Throughout his Career he served on a wide variety of academic committees, served as chair of the Chemistry Department, and received many awards, including the Lange Award for excellence in science teaching in 1993. In addition to many research publications, Professor Wade has been very active in the writing and publication of materials associated with the teaching of organic chemistry. His textbook "Organic Chemistry", published by Prentice-Hall is in its seventh edition and is recognized as one of the most popular texts on the market.
His interests outside the academic world include repair and restoration of old violins, bows and related instruments, fly fishing, big game hunting, gunsmithing and target shooting. He was also an Officer with the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office. He has two daughters, Christine and Jennifer.
